Description	:	ELMER LLOYD MANLEY Elmer Lloyd Manley was the youngest of twelve children born to David Stephen Manley and Isabella Barbara McNair Manley. He was born on March 17, 1912, He was the only child of the Manley children to be born in the big cement house they built at Kirk, Colorado. He was born with Downs Syndrome. Read More	ELMER LLOYD MANLEY Elmer Lloyd Manley was the youngest of twelve children born to David Stephen Manley and Isabella Barbara McNair Manley. He was born on March 17, 1912, He was the only child of the Manley children to be born in the big cement house they built at Kirk, Colorado. He was born with Downs Syndrome. Elmer was a friendly young man and Grandma kept him with her as long as she could. She would send him to the store with a chicken to trade for groceries. After Grandma moved to Grand Junction, he would spend time with some of the brothers and sisters here. In 1934 when Ralph and Nellie moved here for the summer, he spent time with them. Nellie told about him tying a red handkerchief on a big stick and heading down the road for Bill and Orpha’s - whistling. Mrs. Capps, a neighbor, was always so nice to Elmer as were the other neighbors. Grandma finally moved him to the State Home & Training School in Grand Junction as she realized that she couldn't take care of him at home. She was afraid something would happen to her and she wanted him settled. Elmer worked in the kitchen while at the home. Workers there said he was so particular about the dishes and no one better use his dish rags. He had one for the dishes and one for the pots and pans. When we’d go to see him he was always so tickled. He would shake all our hands and love us to visit. We always tried to go at Christmas and his birthday and take him things. When we went to Palisade to get Earl and Margie’s place for dinners, we would pick up Grandma and go get Elmer and he enjoyed the big meals with the entire family. Others visited him and took him gifts too. He always knew his family when they went to see him. They later moved Elmer to Montrose to a nursing home. He was getting diabetes and some arthritis. Elmer passed away at Montrose January 30, 1972. He is buried beside his mother in the Orchard Mesa Cemetery in Grand Junction. Written to the best of my memory by Marilyn Haller. Marilyn is the daughter of David Ralph Manley and Nellie E. Duncanson Manley.
