Description	:	Bernita Marian (Volk) Pace, 84, passed away surrounded by her family on March 19, 2013 at Allen Memorial Hospital. Born July 14, 1928, on a farm east of Waverly to Fredrick and Elizabeth Rosol Volk, she was a lifelong resident of Waverly. Following her graduation from Waverly High School in 1946, she worked as a telephone operator at Northwestern Bell. Bernita married Maurice "Pat" Pace in 1950 and together they raised seven children. Born July 14, 1928, on a farm east of Waverly to Fredrick and Elizabeth Rosol Volk, she was a lifelong resident of Waverly. Following her graduation from Waverly High School in 1946, she worked as a telephone operator at Northwestern Bell. Bernita married Maurice "Pat" Pace in 1950 and together they raised seven children. She provided daycare for several families before working as the kitchen supervisor at Bremwood Lutheran Children's Home from 1973 until her retirement. Bernita was an avid reader and also enjoyed gardening, sewing, baking, working crossword and jigsaw puzzles, and playing cards. On a beautiful day you would find her outside enjoying the sun and tending to her garden or fishing. She was passionate about protecting the environment and recycling. Left to cherish her memories are her children, Joe and Sherry Pace of Forest City, IA; Mike and CJ Pace of Sparta, WI; Ann and Ken Opatz of Lisbon, IA; Tim and Mary Pace of Buckner, MO; Carol and Bob Connolly of Johnston, IA; Steve Pace of Independence, MO; and Dave and Karen Pace of Blue Springs, MO. Her grandchildren were her special pride and joy. They include Adam Pace of Britt, IA; Angie (Randy) Brodzeller of Minneapolis, MN; Brian and Andrew Pace of Madison, WI; Christy (Gabe) Burkhart and son Mason of Urbandale, IA; Patrick (Marlin) Opatz of Cedar Rapids, IA; Kimberly Opatz of Cedar Rapids, IA; Maura and Jill Connolly of Johnston, IA; Shawn (Heather) O'Dowd of Lee's Summit, MO; Chris (Holly) O'Dowd of San Antonio, TX; and Nick (Susan) O'Dowd and children Owen and Finley of Independence, MO; Falhon (Michael) Swanson, Jeff Webb, and Jay and Jessa Eichman of Kansas City, MO. Bernita is also survived by her sister-in-law Florence Truesdell of Cedar Falls, many nieces and nephews, and special friends Marlys and Dick Benschoter, Mary Loudermilk, Evelyn Rosenau, and little Teagan. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and siblings Herbert, Fred, Lenore, Lillian, James, and Roy. Bernita's grandfather, Mike Rosol, was instrumental in the establishment of St. Mary's Catholic Church in its former location in southeast Waverly. A lifelong member of St. Mary's, Bernita's services will be held on Friday, March 22, at 11 a.m., with Father Mel Hemann officiating. Family will greet friends and relatives beginning at 10 a.m. at the church. Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Waverly.
