Mrs. BERNDT was born on the family farm in Jefferson County, the daughter of Joseph and Veronica KURTZ. She married Edward BERNDT December 23, 1968. She graduated from Pleasant Plain High School and Ottumwa Business College. She was employed in secretarial positions at Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Burlington, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, in Des Moines, and at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids, until her retirement in 1968. She also worked at the Muskegon waste water treatment plant in Michigan. She and her husband lived in Charles City and Muskegon, Michigan, and Coopersville, Michigan. They moved to Cary, North Carolina, in 2011 to be closer to family. She was a devoted wife. She was proud of her Iowa heritage and that she had visited all 50 states. She had a keen interest in her family's history and was the family historian. She had many interests and hobbies. She loved to travel, knit, sew, bake pies, try new recipes, and can and freeze fruits and vegetables. She and her husband enjoyed fishing and traveling in the U.S., Europe and Costa Rica. Survivors include five nieces and one nephew. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward; her parents; two sisters, Bernetta KURTZ and Leona KRON; and one brother, Paul KURTZ.
