I have not been able to find a marriage record for them, but in the 1900 Census for Wapello County, Iowa, Madison, age 34, and Bertha, age 17, stated that they had been married in 1899. Madison was the father of Bertha’s children, named in her obituary below. It appears that Madison and Bertha later divorced. Obituary From “Ottumwa Courier,” September 26, 1949: Mrs. Bertha Boyer DeWitt, 66, wife of Floyd Dewitt, died at 3:40 a.m. today at the home, 1949 East Main street. The daughter of James and Ellen Poncey [sic], she was born at Wapello August 20, 1883, but had been a resident of Ottumwa most of her life. She was married to Floyd Dewitt September 28, 1930, and was a member of the East End Christian church. Besides her husband, she is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Mary Smith, Mrs. Uleda Franklin, and Mrs. Letha Dorn, all of Ottumwa, and Mrs. Blanche Young, Davenport; two sons, Errett Boyer and Carl Boyer, both of Ottumwa; 24 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren, and four sisters, Mrs. Minnie Shepherd, Mrs. Rosa Jones, Mrs. Cora Hobbs, and Mrs. Nora Thompson, all of Ottumwa. She was preceded in death by her parents, and by four brothers, Henry, Oscar, John and Martin Poncey [sic]. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Johnson funeral chapel, conducted by Brother James McMorrow and Brother Robert Kerby. Burial will be in Shaul cemetery.
