April 16, 1925 - Carroll Times - The many friends of the Mrs. John Wieland family of this city were shocked Easter Sunday when word spread through town that Miss Besse Wieland had passed away at her home at 11:45 o'clock that morning. While it was known that she had not been in good health since Christmas, when she suffered an attack of flu, her condition was not thought to be serious by her friends and until the last few weeks she was able to be about as customary attending social affairs and looking after business matters. For years she had been suffering with leakage of the heart and it was this affliction which became aggravated after the flu and caused her death, which came peacefully Sunday morning as she slept. Through her illness she was full of hope that she would soon be as well as customary and was in her usual happy spirit. If she had any misgivings as to the return of health she did not show it. Her death will go especially hard on her mother as mother and daughter were very devoted, enjoying each others companionship to the greatest degree. Besse Amelia Wieland was born in Carroll July 29, 1879, and except for the years she was associated in business with her sister, Miss Anna Wieland in Chicago, has lived here all her life. She had great artistic talent and fashioned many beautiful things with her paints and water colors. Many homes in the city can boast of pictures made by her or some other piece of art which she has constructed. She was a devout Catholic and was very sincere in her religious belief. As a friend she could always be relied upon and her friendship was valued by all who knew her intimately. Besides her mother she is survived by one sister, Miss Anna Wieland, and four brothers, Charles Wieland of St. Louis, Mo.; Bert Wieland of this city; Leonard Wieland, Will Wieland and Edward Wieland of Lake View. Her father, John Wieland, died in this city November 15, 1920. Funeral services were held in the St. Lawrence church Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock with a requiem high mass, Rev. Fr. Joseph Cordes officiating. The pallbearers were Henry Walz, Lambert Rohner, Dr. W.H. Shirley, Dr. Stanton Sherman, Lawrence Wieand, and Don Wissler.
