Nov 18, 1920 - Carroll Times - John J. Wieland, one of the prominent citizens of this city died at the hospital Monday evening, November 5th, after an illness extending over many months. He knew death was approaching and died fully sanctified with the full rites of his faith. Funeral services were held this morning at St. Lawrence church. Early in the spring when his condition became alarming to him and his family, he made a trip to Rochester Minnesota, to consult with the Mayo Brothers. Upon his return home he spent most of his time at Lakewood in which he felt justified pride, but later in the summer was obliged to return to his home in Carroll and entered the hospital for treatment a few weeks before his death. Mr. Wieland was prominent in business circles in this city for many years. He was a thorough lover of horses and before the day of the automobile always drove one of the best looking horses in the town since his retirement from business he centered his interest in Lakewood which is now owned by his sons and daughters, and in his farm just north of the city. John J. Wieland was born in Ohio January 6, 1842, and was married to Miss Elizabeth R. Andre, of Columbus, Ohio, October 7, 1863. They came to Carroll in 1873 and this has since been their home. Seven children and their mother are left to mourn the loss of their father and husband: Charles, of St. Louis; Leonard, Pontiac, Illinois; Bert, of Carroll; Will and Edward, of Lake View; Anna, of Chicago, and Besse, of this city.
