Read More	From Great Falls Tribune 12-16-2009: Betty Lorraine (Higdem) Galloway, 78, of Great Falls, died of natural causes Friday at Renaissance House in Great Falls. Survivors include her husband; two sons; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous uncles, aunts and cousins. Betty was born March 6, 1931, at Sunburst, Mont., a daughter of Oscar and Wilma (Roberts) Higdem. She grew up and attended schools at Kevin, Oilmont and Sunburst, where she graduated from high school. In 1949, she enrolled in Northern Montana College at Havre. She met her husband-to-be there, and it is not certain who picked whom, but she became engaged on March 6, 1950. She and Edwin Galloway were married Sept. 1, 1951. They moved to Belgrade to live, and after living there only 2½ months, they received a letter that changed their lives. Her husband was drafted into the U.S. Marines in December 1951. As soon as Edwin graduated from boot camp, they moved to Oceanside, Calif. They moved back to Great Falls after Edwin's service. In 1957, they moved to Ulm, Mont. They had no running water, insulation or rugs on the floor. By summer's end, they had a basement enclosed where the family moved into the first part of October. In 1961, Betty joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was active in the Cascade Branch. She helped start a Cub Scout program in Ulm and became the den mother, and she was also active in the community. She chaperoned Golden Skyliners Drum and Bugle Corps in 1973 to Washington, D.C., for President Nixon's inauguration. In 1965, the family spent a year in Wisconsin. They came back to Ulm from Wisconsin and traded the house in Ulm for property in Great Falls, where Betty helped with rentals. In 1971, they bought the Terrace Motel, which Betty operated. In 1972, they added four new units plus living quarters there and she operated in until 1979. She also did the books for Galloway Inc. Construction and Great Falls Lumber Do It Best Hardware. In 1985, she was involved with running the old Columbus Hospital, which they did for a few years. Betty was the main caregiver for her parents before their deaths. She and Edwin had a daughter, Susan, who was murdered in Great Falls in 1982, and shortly thereafter, Betty's health began to deteriorate. In 1997, Betty was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. In 2000, she had heart problems and her Alzheimer's became worse. In 2004, she was transferred to assisted living. Betty always enjoyed shopping and traveling and particularly liked bowling, shiny things, country music, her dog Tasha and fancy cakes. In addition to her daughter Susan, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Joey, in 1997; her parents; and a brother, Benjamin, in 1973.
