She was born April 8, 1921, at Phoenix City, Ala., to James A. and Anne (Cross) Shelton. She lived in Phoenix City until age 9, when she moved to Pallet Grove, Mo., after her father's death. She had been in failing health for several months. She was born April 8, 1921, at Phoenix City, Ala., to James A. and Anne (Cross) Shelton. She lived in Phoenix City until age 9, when she moved to Pallet Grove, Mo., after her father's death. She attended Pallet Grove Grade School until moving to Armstrong, Mo., and later Booneville, Mo., where she graduated high school. She was married to Merlin R. Kirkland on Feb. 1, 1942, at Kansas City, Kan. Following their marriage, they lived in Coffeyville for a few years until moving to Edna in 1947. She had lived there since then. He preceded her in death on Jan. 4, 2005. She enjoyed cooking and taking care of family. Survivors include two sons, Garry R. Kirkland of Garnett and Jimmy W. Kirkland of Edna; two daughters, Marla A. Yarbrough of Bartlett and Lanetta Oxford of Parsons; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a brother, James R. Shelton. The service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be at Lake Creek Cemetery at Bartlett. The family suggests memorials to the Edna Library or the American Diabetes Association. These may be left at or mailed to the funeral home, P.O. Box 325, Altamont, 67330.
