Blane, son of James W. and Ella (Tasler) Webster was born Dec. 10, 1909 at Madison, NE. He moved with his parents from their farm near Madison to a farm in Boone County south of Albion, NE. He attended Plum Center District 9 grade school and graduated from St. Edward High School in 1929. On January 27, 1938 he married Genevieve K. Hirsch at the St Edward NE Catholic Church. They lived and farmed east of Cedar Rapids where they raised their four children and the children also attended Plum Center School. In 1956 Blane and Gen moved into Cedar Rapids where they owned and operated the B & G Tavern for six years. In 1962 they sold the tavern and Blane became a sales representative for Walnut Grove Feed Products for the next 15 years. Blane was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and proudly belonged to the Knights of Columbus. He served four years on the Town Board and two years as President of Cedar Rapids Community Club. He was a member of the Volunteer Fire Department. Blane was proud of his Irish ancestry and in that tradition he was a talented storyteller. He made his stories come alive with his descriptive and animated language. His tales were entertaining and delivered with a gold tooth grin and a twinkle in his eye. He was friendly, outgoing and often prefaced his homilies and bits of wisdom with the statement, “As my old dad would say….”. He was very proud of his father who had raised Blane and his four siblings after the loss of their mother in 1916. Blane was 6 years old when that tragedy befell the family. Blane was a passionate farmer and embraced progressive ideas like contour farming, shelterbelts, and grass waterways. He was part of the revolution created by a major technological innovation, the tractor. He resolutely left the horse drawn era behind but not his beautiful burly bay team. He happily harnessed them up on Sunday afternoons to pull the children up and down the driveway on old bedsprings to smooth out the ruts made by the tractor tracks. He loved his job as a Walnut Grove Sales and Service Representative. It allowed him to visit every farm in the county where his loyal customers appreciated his knowledge, wisdom and “gift of gab”. He had a quick wit and a quick temper, which sometimes caused him to turn the air blue with some very colorful language. But, “Sure and begorrah”, he could not sustain his anger or hold a grudge for more than 30 seconds. Blane was a kind, loyal and trusted husband, father and friend to all who knew him. Survivors at the time of his death were his wife, Genevieve, his daughters, Deanna (Dick) Ostrander, Monnie (Tom) Revolt, and Patti Lambert, his son James Blane (Jan) Webster, sisters Delores Broughton, Jean (Jim) Moore, 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents, one brother, Dale and one sister, Geraldine Webster.
