Description	:	Brittain “Britt” Sugg was one of several children of Samuel Sugg and Elizabeth “Betsy” Ann Walton (confirmed via multiple records). As his father Samuel was the guardian for an elder Britain Sugg’s daughter following that man’s death, it is presumed this Britain and Samuel had a close relationship and that “our” Britt was named for him. Furthermore, there was a different Britain Utley, no doubt related to this mob, in Raleigh records in the 1780’s. Given that estate and other official records list our guy as Brittain, but the tombstone obviously has “Brintton,” some further explanation regarding his name is required. Both “Britton” and “Briton” shows up in the census, newspaper, and Raleigh City records. There are also contemporary references to him as “Britt.” It’s all very confusing, but my adherence to the spelling as written in multiple guardianship documents is warranted. Certain online records have given Britt’s death as 2 February 1891 and NOT 1893…seemingly indicating this marker was created in later years…listing his age as 76. The report in question was submitted on 28 February 1891; this and, of course, his multiple 1891 obituaries are why I am using the earlier date here. Thus the tombstone, as it stands, is incorrect on both his given name and death date. As late as 1850, Brittain was living at home with his mother, Elizabeth, and other family members. One of his siblings, John Beckwith Sugg—along with both of their wives—is buried in the old City Cemetery, as well. Lavinia (Sugg) DeCarteret, who is more likely a half-sister, also rests here. So do other sisters-in-law, nephews, and nieces. Britt’s brothers, Madison Roddina Sugg, Charles “Charlie” Hinton Sugg, and William Henry Sugg, and a sister, Frances “Fanny” (Sugg) Woods, can also be found on Find-a-Grave. I suspect several more Sugg family members are buried in this City Cemetery, though we may not be able to find the records to support this. We can always hope for obits! Nevertheless, a number of KNOWN relatives are buried here. Brittain’s place of burial was originally based upon a cemetery survey compiled in 1940 by the Historical Records Survey of North Carolina, and in no small means confirmed by his tombstone. His obituary reconfirms this. Though in 1850, he was listed as a farmer, Britt was a locksmith when he married the considerably younger Helen Debnam on 16 September 1878 in Wake Co., NC. …Maybe he had the key to her heart. He was also a gunsmith and a gun-stock maker. For those researching this Sugg family and its descendants: Both Sugg and Suggs are seen as “the” surname for this group but, through several generations, Sugg with no s has predominated. Censuses are unreliable, as the same individual’s names switch back and forth. It is not uncommon for tombstones, censuses, death records, and more to contradict for the same person. Researchers must bear in mind two things: Moses Sugg, often referred to as Moses Sugg, Sr., was the grandfather of “our” Samuel Sugg. In 1784, he went before the North Carolina State Legislature and had the names of his natural sons changed from “Taylor” to “SUGG.” Not Suggs. In estate, guardianship, and deed records (which is to say, “official,” “legal” documents) for Samuel and his family, Sugg not only predominates, one will be hard pressed to locate “Suggs” AT ALL. Censuses, as mentioned, and newspapers are another matter and one not only has to question their reliability, but also has to wonder just who provided the source material for any of these when a person’s own name is so inconsistently spelled. (In one census, Britton SUGGS is living with his brother, John Beckwith SUGG. He was a member of the Central M. R. church and died in the fear of God. The funeral will take place from the Central church at 3 o'clock this afternoon. “The Evening Visitor (from Raleigh)”; Monday, 2 February 1891; pg 1 Died. This morning about 8:30 o’clock, at his residence, No. 808, South Wilmington street, Mr. Britton Sugg in the 79th year of his age of pneumonia. Mr. Sugg was a member of Central Methodist Church and expressed himself on Wednesday as perfectly willing and ready to go when called. He lived to a ripe old age and died peacefully. The funeral will take place from Central M.E. Church at 3 o’clock tomorrow afternoon.
