Description	:	John Beckwith Sugg was born on 16 August 1816 in Wake Co., NC to Samuel Sugg and Elizabeth “Betsy” Ann Walton. His 1836 guardianship account allots $9.80 to H. or N. Utley for board and tuition (this Utley is undoubtedly a relative). It is from his father’s journal and probate records that his middle name has been identified. His 1836 guardianship account allots $9.80 to H. or N. Utley for board and tuition (this Utley is undoubtedly a relative). It is from his father’s journal and probate records that his middle name has been identified. John was married to Elizabeth “Lizzie” Earp, daughter of Mildred (last name unknown) and an unknown father, on 14 April 1865 in Wake Co., NC (Caswell Pollard, bondsman; Thomas Utley, witness). During the Civil War and apparently into the late 1870’s, John maintained a grocery. Records pertaining to his estate and the indicate he had a claim against the government (through the Southern Claims Commission) for property damage due to the War Between the States and that said claim was not settled prior to his expiry. Sadly, a local newspaper reveals the rejection of his claim was not his only issue. Around May of 1876, his store (located adjacent to his home) was robbed of property and about $500 in cash. In September 1877, his barn burnt. In addition to the property damage, he lost valuable livestock. It was suggested it may have been a case of arson. John, often referred to as J.B. Sugg, worked for a time as Raleigh’s Keeper of the City Pumps and as Sexton for the Raleigh City Cemetery (referred to as the Old Cemetery, and now on the National Register). The latter may explain, in part, why so many of his relatives rest therein (documented by obits, tombstones, and the Raleigh Death Register). John himself died on 11 June 1887 in Raleigh; his obit is in the 12 June “News and Observer.” -------- REGARDING “SUGG” vs. “SUGGS” For those researching this Sugg family and its descendants: Both Sugg and Suggs are seen as “the” surname for this particular branch of the family but, through several generations, Sugg with no s has predominated. Censuses are unreliable, as the same individual’s surname(s) switch back and forth. It is not uncommon for tombstones, censuses, death records, and more to contradict other records for the same person or family. (As an example, in one census, John Beckwith SUGG is living with his brother, Britton SUGGS. The sibs were only lines apart!) Bear in mind that, in 1784, Moses Sugg, Sr. (great-grandfather of John) successfully petitioned the North Carolina State legislature to legally change the surnames of his natural born sons (John’s grandfather and granduncles) from Taylor to SUGG…NOT SUGGS! In estate, guardianship, and deed records (which is to say, “official,” “legal” documents) for Samuel Sugg and his family, Sugg not only predominates, one will be hard pressed to locate “Suggs” at all. Censuses, as mentioned, and newspapers are another matter and one not only has to question their reliability, but also has to wonder just who provided the source material for any of these when a person’s own name is so inconsistently spelled. As another example, John is listed as a Sugg in his guardianship records, in the probate records of his father, in his marriage record, and in his own probate records…but listed as Suggs in his obituary!
