Description	:	Nancy Maria Sugg was the daughter of Samuel Sugg and Elizabeth “Betsy” Ann Walton – and their oldest known child. She was married to James W(illiam?) Bryan, son of John Bryan and Martha Patsy Hinton. The marriage date and place are currently unknown; Ancestry’s suggestions are, frankly, impossible. Incorrectly listed as Nancy Merier (and other such spellings) in this document or that, she is specifically listed as Nancy MARIA BRYAN in the probate records of her father, Samuel. Incorrectly listed as Nancy Merier (and other such spellings) in this document or that, she is specifically listed as Nancy MARIA BRYAN in the probate records of her father, Samuel. You’ll also see the family’s last name vacillate between Bryan and Bryant. It is possible the original “Merier” came from Samuel’s own journal and you’ll find both Nancy Maria and Nancy Merier popping up amongst multiple descendants. It is believed these Bryan ancestors are buried here. Two of Nancy Maria Bryan’s sons can be found here, as well as countless sibs, other relatives, and in-laws (Nancy’s brother, John Beckwith Sugg, had even been the Sexton at one point). However, her obituaries do not give a place of burial. I plan to contact Christ Church, directly. On the other hand, there is at least one reference to the “J.W. Bryan Lot” in the old Raleigh Cemetery. The wife of one of Nancy’s grandsons is buried there and, I suspect, so are J.W. and wife. Why else would he have the lot?
