He was born in Red Bluff, CA on July 25, 1940 to Johnnie Orin Johnston and Veda Alene (Bell) Johnston. He was 77 years old and had lived in Gerber his entire life. He graduated from Red Bluff High School in 1958 and married Carol Gobin on November 7, 1959 in Red Bluff, CA. He worked for Southern Pacific Railroad as a switchman from 1958 to 1964. Later he went to work for Kimberly Clark Simpson Paper and Pulp and Shasta Paper in Anderson, Ca for 34 years. He had been Fire Chief of the Gerber Volunteer Fire Department for 34 years, was a Director of the Gerber Las Flores Community Services District, was a member of the Jed Smith Mountain Men, loved going to many rendezvous and shooting black powder guns. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Red Bluff, Sons of Retirement Branch No. 139, Tehama Shooters Association, and Tehama County Genealogical and Historical Society. He was an avid outdoorsman, loved fly fishing and hunting. He would spend all summer at Mill Creek, where he and his wife have had a cabin since 1984. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Carol Ann Johnston; son, Bradley L. Johnston (Marita) of Chester, CA; daughter, Robin Rae Johnston of Chicago Park, CA; grandchildren, Jaymi Rae Garrett (Scott) of Calfax, CA, Mathew Thomas Jacobson (Savannah) of Chicago Park, CA; and great-grandson, Scott M. Garrett III of Calfax, CA. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Orin L. Johnston and sister Beverly Rae Allan, and niece Karen Rae Allan.
