His was born at his mother's home place, in Doddridge County. Some locatable documents show that he made a mark for his signatures. Burdie never married or had recorded children. He was the oldest son of Sarah Melissa Greathouse Ross. None of her five births were ever recorded with a name for father. He is registered on the 1880 census with Greatehouse for his name, the age of one year and grandson of Silas Greatehouse and Mary C Greatehouse. His mother is listed as daughter, Sarah M Greatehouse, at this point. It isn't until the 1910 census that his mother is listed by Malissie Greathouse, Head and he is labeled Burton Greathouse, Son. Three of his brothers are all labeled on this census. They are Ruben, Earl, Sherd Greathouse and all as Son. 1920 and 1930 census show Burdie listed on his youngest brother's record, one as a boarder and one as a brother. Sherd or Sheridan is the youngest brother and started the confusion about Burdie and his parents. Sherd has given his grandparent's names, as his parent's names, on all occasions he was asked, in registering. His actual age is scrambled, as well. Sherd had given one older brother's birth year as his for his Social Security registration. Few of his birth years match up with his actual birth year. It has even affected Sherd's headstone. Sherd's daughter, Hazel Greathouse Owens, was responsible for the incorrect data being entered on Burdie's death certificate. She was simply following all that she was told by her father and the scrambled records he caused. John Silas and Mary Catherine Greathouse were grandparents to Sherd and Burdie. Sarah Melissa Greathouse Ross is the mother of Burdie but his father is on no legal documents or records. Burdick's military registration names his Uncle Henry as the person who would always know Burdie's address. (The middle sister, Loucretia, was born the same year as their youngest uncle, French Greathouse! That made Burdie four years Older than his uncle.)
