He attended Concordia Public Schools and graduated from Concordia High School in 1943. He was drafted into the United States Army Air Corp in 1943 and was discharged in 1946. He was employed with the construction paving crew for M.W. Watson Construction Company of Topeka, Kansas. He was united in. marriage to Melva D. Williams on September 20, 1947, in Caldwell, Kansas. They moved to Concordia, Kansas, in 1950. He worked for the street department for the City of Concordia, built wood trestle bridges with Wentz Construction Company of Concordia. In 1960, he began Burton Gerard Construction Company, now known as BG Construction Company. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Administrative Board Chairman, Methodist Men, Board of Trustees, V.F.W. Post 588, former member of the Elks Lodge, all of Concordia, Cloud Corp, other civic committees of Concordia, and City Planning Commission of Concordia. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Irene Richard and Freda Richard. He is survived by his wife, Melva of Concordia, Kansas, a son, Ron Gerard of Olathe, Kansas, a brother, Rex Gerard and a sister, Velma Shepard, both of Concordia, Kansas, and a granddaughter. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 10, 1998, at; the First United Methodist Church, Concordia, Kansas, with Rev. Ken Parker officiating. Burial was made in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Concordia, Kansas. Salina Journal - Oct 9, 1998 CONCORDIA - Burton K. Gerard, 73, Concordia, died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1998, at Cloud County Health Center, Concordia. Mr. Gerard was born Oct. 18, 1924, at Concordia. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He worked with the concrete paving crew for M.W. Watson Construction Co., Topeka; the street department for the city of Concordia; built wooden trestle bridges with Wentz Construction Co., Concordia, and Burton Gerard Construction Co., now known as BG Construction Co. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he served as administrative chairman, held offices with United Methodist Men and was a member of the board of trustees for nine 1 years. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 588 and the Elks Lodge, both of Concordia, and served on Cloud Corp and other civic committees. He was a member of the City Planning Commission of Concordia. Survivors include his wife, Melva of Concordia; a son, Ron of Olathe; a sister, Velma Shepard of Concordia; a brother, Rex of Concordia; and a granddaughter. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Concordia First United Methodist Church, the Rev. Ken Parker officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Concordia. Memorials may be made to American Heart Association or American Cancer Society. Visitation will be after 9 a.m. today at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Chapel, 325 W. Sixth St., Concordia 66901.
