Description	:	Caleb Hargis, 88 of New Sharon, passed away Friday, May 16, 2008 at the Mahaska County Hospital in Oskaloosa. Funeral services will be Monday, May 19, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. at the Union Mills Christian Church with Pastor Kerry Lake officiating. Interment will be at the Union Mills Cemetery. Caleb Elisha Hargis, son of Stanly and Martha (Ferguson) Hargis was born April 4, 1920 in Mahaska County. He graduated from Lacey High School in 1938. On February 27, 1941 Caleb was united in marriage to Helen May McMains in Mahaska County. He farmed east of the Union Mills area until retiring in 1999. He ran a bull dozer for nearly 35 years while he farmed. One of Caleb's most memorable experiences was taking the entire family to Lac-De-Melac, Canada after his retirement. He enjoyed his fishing trips to Canada and Minnesota that he very seldom missed. Caleb was an avid Cubs fan. He enjoyed camping, hunting, politics and playing cards; especially spades. Caleb belonged to the Union Mills Christian Church where he was an Elder and served as a board chairman for many years. He also served on the North Mahaska School board, where he was a key role in developing the track, football, baseball and softball fields. His memory is honored by his wife, Helen of New Sharon; two sons, Jim (Nancy) Hargis and C.E. (Debra) Hargis of New Sharon; two daughters, Elaine (Charles) Johnston of Goshen, New York and Melanie (Joseph) Blunk of Fremont; eight grandchildren, O. Adam Johnston of Seattle, Washington, Andy (Melanie) Hargis of New Sharon, Jessica (Jaroed) Sanders of Montezuma, Ben (Tara) Conover of Lynnville, Angela (Patrick) Patterson of Walford, Annie (Brent) Mossman of New Sharon, Nick (Stephanie) Hargis of West Cliff, Colorado and Abby Hargis of Pleasant Hill and 10 great grandchildren. Caleb was preceded in death by his parents, Stanly and Martha Hargis and a son Terry Paige Hargis.
