The Nelson Gazette, Thursday, October 20, 1949 =========================== Calista Jane, daughter of George and Mary Rife, was born September 30, 1887, on a farm near Deweese, Nebraska, and departed this life October 17, 1949, at the home north of Nelson, at the age of 62 years and 17 days. She united with the Christian church at Oxbow as a young girl, later transferring her membership to the Christian church (sic) at Deweese when the family moved there. After her marriage she placed her membership with the Pleasant View United Brethren church (sic) north of Nelson. Since early girlhood she has been a steadfast member of the church and has faithfully served her Saviour. She attended Cotner College at Lincoln, Nebraska, and taught school in Nuckolls and Clay counties. She was united in marriage to Frank M. Harris on August 10, 1910, at Hastings, Nebraska. They made their home on the farm homesteaded by her husband's father, John B. Harris. While they were visiting on the west coast in 1923 their house burned. They have since made their home on the adjoining quarter section of which an eighty was her father's homestead. Her father, mother, two brothers and one sister preceded her in death. She leaves to mourn her passing her loving and faithful husband, Frank, five children: John L. of Bellingham, Washington; Frank R. of Nelson, Nebraska; Carl W. of Van Nuys, California; Mary Calista of Schenectady, New York; and George A. of York, Nebraska; eight grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. C.H. Jessee of Eugene, Oregon; one brother, Scott Rife, of Caldwell, Idaho; and many other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon, October 20, at 2:30 o'clock in the Pleasant View United Brethren church (sic). They were conducted by the pastor, Robert Embree, of York, Nebraska; assisted by Rev. Daniel Berger of Helvey, Nebraska. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ferebee, Mrs. A.B. Ferebee and Roy Brookhart, accompanied by Mrs. Joseph Ferebee, sang "All The Way My Saviour Leads Me", "Sunrise" and "Abide With Me". Burial was at Smith cemetery (sic).
