Read More	Published in The Star Democrat on June 4, 2018 Calvert Elmer Thompson Sr. answered the call of the Lord on June 3, 2018. He was surrounded by his loving family. Born the 5th child of Lemuel Alexander Thompson Sr. and Annie Inez Baxter Thompson on June 5, 1935 in Dominion, MD. He grew up working with his father and brothers in the family boat building and repair business. Later as the Thompson boys grew to adulthood Calvert caught the racing bug and competed along with his brothers Lem Jr. and Jack in POD hydroplane racing along the East Coast. He won the East Coast Championship in 1955 and 56 racing his POD Wild Cat 045. In 1955, he was inducted into the Gulf Marine Hall of Fame. He won 45 trophies in his 5 year racing career and won High Point Plaque for Region 4 as well as for the Nation. He retired from hydroplane racing, thinking that he should give up dangerous activity in favor of fatherhood. In 1965, he purchased the property next to his family homestead and carried on Thompsons Boatyard for 36 years. He was a quietly generous man, passing on much of his wisdom and kindness to his fellow watermen, friends, family, and community. He would take food to people down on their luck and feed them before sitting down to the table himself. He cut many a bill for a struggling waterman. Callie as his dear friends called him was quick witted and a great practical joker. Once he relocated the My Lynn and listened intently on the next boat to hear all the scuttle about where the boat could be. Callie was an inventor. He filled many little notebooks with ideas of inventions to make things easier to do. He invented Ice Eaters and used them in the winter on his piers to break the ice around the pilings. Callie invented a crab picker that used compressed air to blow the crab meat out of the shell. His brother Jack and he once invented an oyster shocker. This was a contraption to, yes, shock the shell open. Callie was a carver; he carved ducks and made lamps. He made doll furniture. He built wooden skiffs and could fix anything. He even found a way to charge non-rechargeable batteries. Though, his family was a little fearful at the potential hazard of doing this. Callie loved to fish, boat, build, and teach what he had learned to others. For several years, he competed in the local workboat races, piloting the last workboat built by his father to amazing 1st place finishes. His highest speed clocked at 43 mph, not bad for a 33 ft wooden workboat. On June 29, 1957 Calvert Married Rebecca Mae Boulden in Stevensville, MD. They enjoyed almost 61 years together. He is survived by his wife, Daughter Deborah Langrell and Son-in-law Chris, Son Calvert Butterball Thompson and wife Phyllis, Beloved daughter-in-law Rebecca Thompson; grandchildren Daniel Hull and wife Cindy, Bradley Hull and wife Bobbi Jo, Brenda Young and husband Kyle, Valerie Lozado and husband Willie, Sarah Britt and husband Lawrence, Joshua Thompson, and Lydia Ann Thompson. Great grandchildren Natalie Hull (Daniel & Cindy); Callie Hull, Wyatt Wilhoit, Samantha Wilhoit (Bradley & Bobbi Jo); Shelby Young, Chloe Young, Allie Young (Brenda & Kyle); Isabella Lozado, Kathy Lozado (Valerie & Willie); Great great grandson River Curtis (Shelby); a sister-in-law Kay Thompson, and brother-in-law Aulby Bates. He was predeceased by his beloved youngest son Joseph Thompson on October 14, 2014, his brothers Lemuel Thompson Jr., Marvin Buck Thompson, William Jack Thompson, and sister Merle Bates. Pall Bearers are as follows: Daniel Hull, Bradley Hull, Frankie Crouch, Willie Lozado, Butch Young, Freddie Baxter. Honorary Pall Bearers are as follows: Ronnie Horney, Bucky Thompson, Louie Kelley, and Joshua Thompson A visitation will be held on Friday, June 8, 2018 from 6-8 pm at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester, MD. Services will be held on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at 1 pm at Island Alliance Church, Stevensville, MD. Burial will be privately held in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
