Goodrich Another old settler of this county has answered the summons and has passed to bortirne from whence no traveler returns. On Tuesday afternoon, April 28th, at Guttenberg, Iowa, occurred the death of Calvin P. Goodrich, at the age of 74 years. Mr. Goodrich was born in Cayuga county, N. Y., in 1817, and resided there until 21 years of age, when he came west, locating in Quincy, Ill. Five years later he moved to Hazel Green, Wis., the thence to Clayton county in 1849. In 1875 he was appointed a justice of the peace and has held the office from that time until the past two or three years. He has held several township offices, and at one time was a member of the board of supervisors. Whatever position he held he performed the duties of the office in such manner as to win the confidence and respect of all. He leaves a wife, one son, Frank, and three daughters, Mrs. John Luther, Mrs. M. Horsch and Mrs. Herman Schroeder, and a large circle of friends to mourn his death. The funeral will take place Friday afternoon under the auspices of Prairie la Porte Lodge, No. 147 A. F. & A. M., of which he was the first master. +++ OBITUARIES OF WIFE Elkader Register, IA, Thursday, July 28, 1892, pg. 4, col. 5 Mrs. C. P. Goodrich, aged 78 years died of dropsy last Saturday. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Linn at the M. E. Church Monday afternoon. Her remains were taken to the city cemetery for interment. +++ Elkader Argus, IA, Wednesday, August 3, 1892, pg. 5, col. 3 Guttenberg News.--Last Saturday afternoon, at about 5 o'clock, occurred the death of Mrs. C. P. Goodrich at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Emma Horsch, on First street, between Herder and Schiller streets. The deceased was 78 years of age, and the widow of the late C. P. Goodrich, to whom she was married Feb. 28th, 1842. She was the mother of eight children, only three of whom survive her. viz: Mrs. Emma Horsch, Mrs. Herman Schroeder and Mr. Frank Goodrich, our popular merchant. The funeral occurred Monday last, and all that was mortal of this estimable lady was laid to rest in Guttenberg cemetery, whither her remains were followed by a large concourse of sorrowing friends and relatives. +++ OBITUARY OF DAUGHTER AND GRANDSON Elkader Register, IA, Thursday, May 26, 1892, pg. 4, col. 3 Guttenberg. A little before 5 o'clock last Saturday afternoon loud shrieks of a woman were heard in the neighborhood of First and Herder streets. At the same instant dense smoke arose and the alarm of fire was given. Neighbors rushed in from all directions and the fire department appeared promptly on the ground and found John Luther's stable enveloped in flames. The stable was destroyed, but the residence was saved. Fortunately no wind prevailed at the time, otherwise the loss of property in the neighborhood would have been great. Mr. Luther's youngest child, Archie, aged 4 years, and A. C. Goodrich, aged 5 years, had obtained matches and carelessly set fire to the hay loft. Mrs. Luther, on hearing the cries of the children rushed up into the burning loft and dragged out both through the flames, thereby seriously scorching her face and upper body, while the children received injuries about the face and limbs. In the act of releasing a span of horses Mr. Luther also had his left hand badly burned. Drs. Schirmer and Duflin arrived promptly and took charge of the sufferers, but found it impossible to save the lives of mother and child. The boy died at 9 o'clock in the evening, and Mrs. Luther at 4 o'clock Sunday morning. A. C. Goodrich, it is thought, will recover. Mrs. Luther, aged 46 years, was the oldest daughter of C. P. Goodrich, and was the mother of eight children, seven of whom are living. The funeral which took place Tuesday afternoon, was largely attended. The loss of a kind wife and mother will be hard to bear for the survivors, who have the sympathy of the public generally.
