A little before 5 o'clock last Saturday afternoon loud shrieks of a woman were heard in the neighborhood of First and Herder streets. At the same instant dense smoke arose and the alarm of fire was given. Neighbors rushed in from all directions and the fire department appeared promptly on the ground and found John Luther's stable enveloped in flames. The stable was destroyed, but the residence was saved. Fortunately no wind prevailed at the time, otherwise the loss of property in the neighborhood would have been great. Mr. Luther's youngest child, Archie, aged 4 years, and A. C. Goodrich, aged 5 years, had obtained matches and carelessly set fire to the hay loft. Mrs. Luther, on hearing the cries of the children rushed up into the burning loft and dragged out both through the flames, thereby seriously scorching her face and upper body, while the children received injuries about the face and limbs. In the act of releasing a span of horses Mr. Luther also had his left hand badly burned. Drs. Schirmer and Duflin arrived promptly and took charge of the sufferers, but found it impossible to save the lives of mother and child. The boy died at 9 o'clock in the evening, and Mrs. Luther at 4 o'clock Sunday morning. A. C. Goodrich, it is thought, will recover. Mrs. Luther, aged 46 years, was the oldest daughter of C. P. Goodrich, and was the mother of eight children, seven of whom are living. The funeral which took place Tuesday afternoon, was largely attended. The loss of a kind wife and mother will be hard to bear for the survivors, who have the sympathy of the public generally.
