After an illness of a little more than a year Mrs. Emma Horsch passed away at her home on First street about 3:00 o'clock Monday afternoon at the age of 60 years, 7 months and eight days. While she had been in ill health for more than a year, yet she had not been strictly confined to her room until recently and since then life has been slowly ebbing, and the end came as no surprise to the relatives. Mrs. Horsch met with an accident a year ago the 6th of last January from the result of which she never fully recovered and that together with her other affliction, diabetes, brought life to its untimely close. The accident with which she met was caused by the bursting of a hot water bottle that had been applied to her body during a temporary illness. A large portion of the flesh on her side was severely scalded and for several months after the injury steadfastly refused to heal. Her sufferings at times were intense, but she bore up under their strain with patience and hope that few possess. Emma Goodrich was born at Hazel Green, Wis., Sept. 7, 1848, and was the daughter of the late C. P. and Adelia Goodrich. Her parents moved to Clayton county and settled in this vicinity in 1849 and it was here that she grew to womanhood and had since continued to reside. She was married to Michael Horsch, the date of which cannot be ascertained. Two daughters were born to them and are Mrs. Melinda Purnhage and Mrs. Frank Zengel, both residents of Guttenberg, besides whom one sister, Mrs. Herman Schroeder, and one brother, Frank Goodrich, of Lenox, S. Dak., survive. Deceased was a member of the order of the O.E.S. and Yoemen order. The funeral was held from the late residence yesterday afternoon at 2:00 under the auspices of the O.E.S. A short funeral service was conducted at the residence and also at the grave by Rev. J.S. Lilley, pastor of the M.E. church. The remains were laid to rest in the City cemetery. +++ Clayton County Journal, IA, Friday, March 19, 1909, pg. 5, col. 4 Mrs. Emma Horsch died at her home Monday afternoon, March 15th, at 3 o'clock from amyloid as a result of a severe burn received by the bursting of a hot water bottle, in January a year ago. She had been confined to her bed most of the time since and it took several months to heal the scalded parts. She bore the suffering with fortitude while under the care of her loving children. Emma Goodrich was born at Hazel Green, Wis., September 7, 1848, and with her parents, the late C. P. and Adelia Goodrich, came to Clayton county in 1849 and settled on a farm in Miners creek. She was married to Michael Horsch who died a number of years ago, and is mourned by two daughters, Mrs. Malinda Purnhage and Mrs. Adelia Zengel, her sister, Mrs. Herman Schroeder, of Guttenberg, and brother Frank Goodrich of Lenox, S. D. The funeral was held from the late residence at 2:00 o'clock p.m. Thursday, March 18, under the auspices of the O.E.S. and B.A.V., of which she was a member. Rev. J.S. Lilley, pastor of the M.E. Church, conducted the services at the grave in the city cemetery.
