Thorne, was born at Marshalltown, Iowa, on Oct. 23, 1876. Here, as an infant he was brought to the Lord in Holy Baptism, and here he spent his early boyhood days. In the spring of 1887 the Thorne family moved to the Dayton community and established the family home on a farm south east of town. Here Carl was reared, and he spent most of the years of his life. Upon coming to this community the Thorne family immediately affiliated with the Emanuel Lutheran Church of Dayton, and here in due time Carl was confirmed on May 22, 1892, by Pastor C.A. Hemborg. He has remained a faithful member of this congregation throughout his life and has given many years of faithful service to his church in various capacities. On Sept. 16, 1908, Carl Thorne and Selma Sanders were united in marriage at Rockford, Ill. To this union one son and one daughter were born, both of whom survive their father today. Mr. Thorne has been a life long farmer. He has also been active in many areas of the community activities. He helped organize the local Farmers Cooperative Elevator and has been a member of the Board, and has served as secretary since the time of organization. He served as a member of the local consolidated school board, and was a member of this group at the time the High School Building was erected. Mr. Thorne also served his church long and faithfully. He has served both as Trustee and Deacon, and for many years was secretary of the congregation. When the parsonage was built in 1948 and 49, he was a member of the building committee. His last special service to his church was as a member of the Historical Committee at the recent 85th anniversary observance of the congregation. Although frail of health he attended every meeting, and rendered valuable service in translating the major part of a Swedish History of the congregation into English. The closing service of the Anniversary festivities, the Confirmand Reunion, on the afternoon of August 30th, was the last service he was destined to attend in his beloved church. About five years ago Mr. Thorne discontinued his farming operations and Mr. and Mrs. Thorne left the old farm home and moved to Dayton. About 2 years ago he became ill and was taken to the hospital. After treatment there he returned home, and although not bed-fast, he never completely regained his health. About two weeks ago he became worse and was taken to Lutheran Hospital, Fort Dodge, on Sept. 8th. Here after a week of serious illness he passed away of a heart condition, last Tuesday, Sept. 15, 1953 at the age of 76 years, 10 months and 22 days. Mr. Thorne is survived by his widow, Mrs. Selma Thorne, one son Carl S. Thorne, and one daughter Ruth, Mrs. LeRoy Erickson, all of Dayton; one brother, Mr. Oscar Thorne, of Rock Island, Ill., three sisters, Misses Marie and Sadie Thorne and Mrs. G.S. Ecklund, all of Dayton, 5 grandchildren, a number of nephews and nieces, as well as other relatives and many, many friends.
