Denison Review - Wednesday , August 4th, 1915 - On Inst Friday morning, July 30, when the clock registered the hour of 6, the life of our esteemed townsman and prominent pioneer Charles A. Larson, came to a close. The sad news sent out from the home in the early morning cast a gloom of sadness over the town as well as the entire community. For the past twenty years he has suffered considerably with rheumatic trouble, which disabled him for his former activity about the farm and care of his stock, which he was extensively engaged in, and from being about and around. Some two weeks ago he contracted a slight cold, which developed into pneumonia, which in its later stage, aided by tuberculosis, succeeded in terminating hils life. While his family and friends would have liked to have him in their midst many years, when apparent that he would never enjoy his former health, they were satisfied to know that his release from life was also a release from the burden of suffering so long patiently borne by him. Charles Larsen was born in Rydeholm, Smalland, Sweden, December 10, 1854 where he resided until in the year 1867, when at the age of 13, he crossed the ocean for America, locating in Pennsylvania , together with his parents and brothers. The family resided there until 1877, when the west with its wider opportunities attracted them, and coming to Crawford county, located In this locality. Shortly after the family located here, Charles returned to Pennsylvania for a short stay, coming back to this settlement to remain. In the year 1882, on the 20th day of March, he was united in marriage to Miss Eureka Erlckson, the daughter of the prominent pioneers, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Erickson, whose homestead is only half a mile north of the village of Old Kiron, and upon their death the homestead passed Into the hands of Mr. Larson and his wife. In 1887 he purchased the 100 acre tract in the adjoining section where their home was made up till last year, when they moved to Kiron into their new, modern residence where they intended to enjoy the comforts of life better than was possible while on the farm; but the plans were all shattered by the messenger of death after but a short occupancy of the of their new home. Eleven children constitute the family, one of whom died in infancy, the others being Lillie K. now the wife of R.H. Morgan of Kiron; Alma B. the wife of Mr. Schrieber at Minneapolis; Alfred O. who resides upon and farms the old homestead; Lulu, the wife of Gust Salhstrom at Odebolt; Etta, Edna, Eldred, Russell, Earin and Lafe, all of whom are at home. Mr. Larson was a good citizen, a splendid man and neighbor, and a most devoted and kind father. He enjoyed the good will and peace in the midst of his neighbors and friends who accorded him their high esteem. He possessed a kindly and benevolent disposition and generally responded to calls for assistance from those less fortunate than himself, and supported very liberally all worthy projects which were for the betterment of the community. His energies were so directed that he not only won individual success, but also contributed to the prosperity of the community. His industry and intelligent management of his business affairs has brought him substantial and well merited prosperity, and his personal qualities insured him regard and esteem of all with whom he came in contact, and the years brought him a circle of warm friends. He was very much interested in the securing of a school for Kiron and used both his influence and vote to that end, which stands as a most commendable credit and monument to his memory. He had attained the age of 60 years, 7 months and 20 days - a long life, in which storms and sunshine, joy and sorrow, health and sickness, hopes and disappointments, had been enjoyed and suffered. During the last period of his time he realised that he was approaching the end and his testimony was that he was ready to go, having made his peace with his Maker. He resigned himself to His will. His place and chair are now empty in the home and his family are stricken with sadness. Together with them mourns a large circle of sympathizing friends. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon and was attended by the largest concourse ever gathered at a funeral in Kiron, an estimate placing the attendance between 700 and 800. A short service was held at the home and the remains were taken to the Mission church, where the funeral service was conducted by the pastor, Rev. Irvin Johnson. After a short song service, Rev. N Morton pastor of the Baptist church made a short address in which he urged his hearers to prepare for death and the departure from this life, and for the life to come. He was followed by Rev. F.L. Johnson, a life-long friend of the departed, who touched upon incidents and relationships with the deceased. The church was packed and a larger crowd was unable to gain entrance . At the close of the service the casket was placed in the hall where friends and relatives filed by for a last view of the face that had mingled with them so many years. A large number followed the remains to the Kiron cemetery, where the last rites were performed. With sad hearts they turned away from the grave of their neighbor and friend. Besides the family, he leaves two brothers, Andrew and Frank, and one sister-in-law, Mrs. N.P. Larsen, and their families, residing in Otter Creek township, and one sister, Mrs. Charles Carlson and family, residing in Woodbury county, and other relatives to mourn his demise. Though he has bidden farewell to home, family, relatives and friends and gone to the land where no sickness or pain exists, he will be missed and will live long in the hearts of many. The pallbearers, neighbors and old acquaintances of Mr. Larsen, were August Linman, William Sandberg, N.P. Swanson, John Headstrom, Peter Nordell and Francis Norelius. Among those present at the funeral we mention Mr and Mrs. Joel Johnson of Wall Lake, Mr and Mrs. Fred Merg and Charles Erickson of Denison, William and Frank Horn and sisters, Mr and Mrs. Jake Anderson of Odebolt. The deepest sympathy goes out to the stricken ones In their hour of sorrow.
