Interment will be in the Columbus Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Hartman Post 84 Honor Guard. Carl F. Fischer was born May 30, 1918, in Santee, Nebraska, to Louie and Nellie (Heins) Fischer. He attended rural schools in Knox County and graduated from Niobrara High School in 1935. Carl served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Hartington, Nebraska and then at Nemo, South Dakota. He entered the U.S. Army on June 12, 1941 at Fort Crook, Nebraska. He served with the F Company, 63rd infantry, 6th Division. Carl served two years in the Pacific area where he saw combat duty in New Guinea and Lingayn Gulf, Luzon Providence, Philippines. He was honorably discharged on October 1, 1945. He served in the reserves for 5 years until he was called to active duty in 1950 and he served in the Korean War. He received the Purple Heart, Good Conduct, Combat Infantry Badge, and the Bronze Star. On June 1, 1949, Carl was united in marriage to Fern Olson. He was elected Police Judge for the village of Niobrara. He worked as a postal clerk in the Niobrara Post Office and then appointed as Winside Post Master. Carl retired from the Postal Service in 1981 with over 30 years of civil service. He served as President of the Northeast Nebraska Post Masters District 687, the Niobrara School Board, the Community Club, and also served on the Knox County Selective Service Draft Board. Carl and Fern moved to Columbus in 1981. He was instrumental in organizing NARFE Chapter 1902 in Columbus in 1982. Carl organized the first reunion of Army Company F, 63rd infantry, 6th Division which was held in Columbus. He was a life member of the V.F.W. Post 3704, charter member of V.F.W. Post 4834 in Niobrara where he also served as Commander and was a member of the V.F.W. for 67 years. Carl was elected V.F.W. District 3 Commander from 1969 – 1970, and was a life member of the D.A.V. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 84 and where he served on the honor guard for 15 years, participating in 437 ceremonies. He received the Post Honor Guard Award. Carl was a member of the First United Methodist Church and where was a member of the XYZ group. He enjoyed gardening, raising flowers, and working in the yard.
