The firemen were working to put out a smoldering fire in a pile of lumber and other debris, located back of the Coop Elevator. The firemen were called about 11:00 p.m. to the pile of lumber. They had the fire mostly extinguished in a short time, and were merely drowning the source of the smoke, when Chief Larson suddenly passed out. All efforts were quickly made, such as oxygen, resuscitation, artificial respiration, external massage of the heart region, but he could not be brought back. Dr. DeWayne Anderson, county health examiner said an autopsy would be held Saturday morning at Fort Dodge, but as yet, no report has been forthcoming. It is said that Mr. Larson had apparently died of a heart attack. Cause of the fire has been undecided, but several possibilities are being checked. Mr. Larson was born February 23, 1912, and was just 50 years old. He was been active in Stratford affairs for several years. He has been the operator of the Stratford Locker plant for several years, and helped in many local civic duties, in addition to being Fire Chief for many years. Mr. Bill Peterson, assistant Chief, is acting chief at this time. Surviving Mr. Larson is his wife, two sons, Donald and Larry, and two daughters, Donna, Mrs. Arnold Larson and Carol Larson, and one grandchild. Also by twelve brothers and sisters. Funeral services were held in Stratford Lutheran Chuch on Tuesday, September 25. Rev. Robert Carlson officiated, and Hanson's Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Interment was made in Oakwood Cemetery, at Stratford. Dayton Review October 11, 1962 Last Rites Held for Harold Larson Sept. 21 Carl Harold Larson, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Larson, was born in Boone County, Iowa on February 23, 1912 and passed away suddenly on September 21, 1962 at the age of 50 years, 6 months and 28 days. Mr. and Mrs. Norman Erickson sang two songs, "Beyond The Sunset" and "God Be With You Till We Meet Again." Accompanied on the organ by Mrs. Lloyd Angstrom. Pall bearers were Elmer Larson, Glenn Hall, Denver Nuckolls, Ernest Eastberg, Arvid Erickson and Neil Sturtz. Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery at Stratford. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, September 25 at Hanson's Funeral Home in Stratford for the family and at the Stratford Lutheran Church with Rev. Robert Carlson officiating. He was baptized as an infant and confirmed in the Stratford Lutheran Church in which congregation he remained a member until the time of his death. After attending public school in Stratford, he moved with his parents to Titonka where they resided for two years. In 1929, he moved, with his parents, to a farm near Buffalo Center in 1937. On February 4, 1939 he was united in marriage at Forest City, Iowa to Ann Stohr. To this union four children were born: Donna (Mrs. Arnold Carlson), Carol, Larry and Donald. During the summer of 1941 he and Mrs. Larson moved to Stratford and bought the locker which he operated for the last twenty-one years. Mr. Larson was a volunteer fireman for 21 years and fire chief for the last three years. He was State Locker Director and for several years Civil Defense Deputy. He was also a member of: National Institute of Locker and Freezer Provisioners, Iowa Refrigerated Locker Association, Past President of the Commercial Club, Stratford Chamber of Commerce, Iowa Fire Chief's Association, Izaak Walton League in which he was an officer, past member of the Troop Committee for the Stratford Boy Scouts of America, and Past President of the Hamilton County Firemen's Association. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, who died in infancy. In addition to his wife, Ann, and his four children, Donna, Carol, Larry and Donald, he leaves to mourn his passing six brothers: Swen and Floyd of Buffalo Center, John and Lloyd of Thompson, William of Lakota and Clinton of Wooden; and five sisters: Swea Larson of Thompson, Ruth (Mrs. Robert Elwood) of Joice, Mae (Mrs. Charles T. Peterson) of Buffalo Center, Luella (Mrs. Elmer Miller) of Hampton and Viola (Mrs. LeRoy Janssen) of Lakota. He also is survived by one granddaughter, Brenda Carlson, plus many other relatives and friends. Mr. Larson will be remembered and appreciated as a faithful and loving husband and father; a man who had a very special way with all children and a warm and considerate friend of all who knew him.
