CARLSON PASSED AWAY TUESDAY AFTER A LONG ILLNESS After a long and lingering illness, C.J. Carlson, passed away at the family home here Tuesday afternoon. He had been bedridden for several years with tubercular trouble but last week was taken much worse and since that time had been in a critical condition. He was pretty well advanced in years but had been very active up to the time he was taken ill a few years ago. He was one of the highly respected citizens of this community. Stratford Courier September 24, 1925 OBITUARY Carl John Carlson was born in Pikedal, Ulrika parish, Östergötland, Sweden, September 11, 1848. He was confirmed in the year 1867. He came to this country in January, 1877, and located at Madrid where he lived for about three years when he moved to a farm southeast of Stratford, living on that place until he retired from farming in the spring of 1919, moving to Stratford at that time. On April 9, 1882, he was married to Miss Charlotta Anderson and to this union was born eight children, two of whom, Eddie and Roy, died in infancy. He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife and six children. The children are: Mrs. Mabel Monson of Livermore; Ellen, Esther, Walter, Harry and Clarence, all of Stratford. He also leaves two grandchildren at Livermore, one brother, J.M. Carlson of Madrid, two brothers in Sweden, besides numerous other relatives and friends. He departed from this earth on September 15, 1925 at the age of 77 years, and four days, having been bedfast for the past four years, which he bore with much patience. Deceased was a faithful member of the local Lutheran church for nearly forty years. Probably few men could have been more patient than was the deceased during the long days of the long years which he was compelled to stay in bed day after day. Although his body was racked with pain and he was physically very weak yet his intellect was unusually bright and day by day he kept abreast of the worlds news and the local news so that he could engage in very intelligent conversation with any of his many visitors at any time until just a few days before his death. When he was able to be about he was never idle, making some little improvement here and there about his place which transformed it into a real beauty spot in his section of Stratford. Funeral services were held from the home at 1:30 and from the Lutheran church at 2 o'clock on Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Waldo Ekeberg of Dayton. The pall bearers were the three sons, Walter, Harry and Clarence, and three nephews Harry, Clarence and William Carlson of Madrid. The remains were laid to rest in the South Marion cemetery. Those from out of town who attended the funeral services were: Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Carlson, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Carlson, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Carlson, Mr. and Mrs. William Carlson, Mr. and Mrs. O.A. Olson, son and daughter, all of Madrid; Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Samuelson and Mrs. R.R. Linn of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. William Monson and two children of Livermore; Mr. and Mrs. Herman Flickinger of Burnside. Father has gone to the great beyond His work on earth is done Will we miss him? Ask our mother. A spoke in our wheel is broken, No human being can repair, But we have one consolation, For he has found his salvation. He was a friend and father, one who dared Himself to bear the burden; one who shared The pioneer pathway which our father fared He sought the things for which good people cared His life was full of honest toil He plowed life's stern furrow, tilled the soil He done his work with zealous care Displayed his love of duty everywhere. How strange it seems, how brief the span Which is to us the life of man But as the evening twilight fades away The sky is filled with stars, unseen by day. He held until the end the simple creed Which was to him the everlasting need To truth, as it was given him to see God fearing Faith and humble honesty. He sought for love, and love was given Which make the humble home like heaven We'll join him in the better land No more to take the parting hand. - Contributed by C.E.
