JOHNSON LAID TO REST Was Dayton's Oldest Active Merchant Dayton's oldest active merchant C.O. Johnson, passed away last Friday, June 14, age the age of 76 years following an illness of a little over a week which had confined him to his home. For many years Mr. Johnson was associated with various partners in the Big Store located where the C.G.A. Urelius Implement Company is now housed. A couple of years ago he moved his store into the location just north of the post office. He continued to take active part in his business until about two weeks ago when failing health and old age forced him to remain at home. His condition became critical last Wednesday. He was united in marriage to Miss Adelia Peterson on October 8, 1913. Mr. Johnson spent his boyhood days in Sweden, coming to America with his parents in 1879. Deceased was an active member of the local Methodist church for the past 48 years and served in several offices. Mr. Johnson was a member of the Masonic Order, Eastern Star and Zagazic Shrine. He had served on the town council at one time. During his 48 years of active business he had seen many changes and times of prosperity and reverse. Funeral services were held from the home and Methodist church on Tuesday afternoon, Rev. A.G. Heddle, pastor, officiating. Mrs. John Johnson and Miss Julia Putzke sang "The City Four Square," "Saved by Grace," and "Going Down the Valley." The pallbearers were O.S. Larson, Will Powers, Ben Lundquist, George Carlson, Swan Lundberg and Judd LeValley. The Masonic Lodge were in charge of services at the grave. T.W. Swanson Funeral Parlors were in charge of the burial. Mr. Johnson was a loyal citizen and a good neighbor and will be missed by many in this and surrounding communities. Dayton Review June 20, 1940 (Page 5) OBITUARY CARL OSCAR JOHNSON Carl Oscar Johnson was born in Sweden on the 14th day of August, 1863 and passed away from this life on the 14th day of June, 1940, at the age of 76 years, 10 months. Mr. Johnson spent part of his boyhood days in Sweden. He came to the United States of America with his parents in the year 1879 and settled in this community. It was here that he spent most of his days with his friends and neighbors. He was united in marriage to Miss Adelia Peterson on October 8, 1913. When a young lad of 19 years of age he united with the Swedish Methodist Church and was a member of that church until it united with the American Methodist Church and it was then called. Thus he was an active member of the Methodist church for the last 48 years. He was elected to the board of trustees about the year 1895 or when he was 22 years of age. During his membership in the church he held every office. He was a Sunday school superintendent and teacher. He was also a member of the choir. During his membership in the church he has been very active in all ranches of the work. He was one of the members who voted for the unification of the churches and he became a member of the official board in what is now called the Methodist church until the last year. During his membership Mr. Johnson has seen many changes take place. Many of his friends have gone to their rewards. There have been 22 Swedish pastors that have served the local church and out of that number 14 have gone to their reward. Also there was a large number of the Swedish membership that have either moved away from this locality or passed away through death. Mr. Johnson was an ardent worker, a devoted member and loyal supporter and a persistant toiler for ever good and noble cause. He was a loving husband and a great friend to all who sought his advice and council. He was loved by his community. He was a member of the Masonic Order and the Eastern Star, also a member of Zagazic Shrine. Deceased also served on the town council. He was in business at Dayton for the last 48 years and during that time has seen many changes. Times of prosperity and times of reverses have been experienced in business. Mr. Johnson leaves to mourn his loss, his widow, Mrs. Johnson; three brothers; Leonard Johnson, Boxholm; Andrew Johnson, Stratford; John Johnson, Emmetsburg; also two sisters; Mrs. J.A. Swenson; Miss Elizabeth Johnson, both of Harcourt; as well as a host of friends and neighbors.
