Shelbina Democrat (Shelbina, MO), 1918-07-03; Page 8, Column 3 OBITUARY Carrie White Barton Bennett, was born in Lentner, June 25, 1895. She was a cooing babe of five months when her old bachelor uncle passed away and was a great joy to his life during her short period with him. She was the second child born to Stephen F. and Susie T. Barton, their first being a still born baby, consequently she was a great light in the home and always remained so. She was also a favorite with both of her grandmothers. There were other children born to this home and, she being the oldest, consequently burdens such as mothers bear, were thrown upon her. She was brave and bore them like a queen, a little nurse and mother always to the little ones; namely, James Lloyd,Nelson, Shelby, Fletcher, Mary Wood, Willie and Thornton. She finished her rural school education under adverse circumstances, living a long ways from school and going a greater part of the time on horseback and always caring for the little ones intrusted to her care. Thru the winter's cold and summer's heat she continued her school work, and never murmured, preparing herself for a teacher, but later was married to Clarence Bennett on August 5, 1915; starting a bright and happy married life. On a cold winter morn in November 1916, a little baby girl was born to them. For a time her life seemed to hang by a single thread and for days and days the best physicians seemed alarmed as to her condition, but finally she was restored to health and strength again. No mother was ever more happy than she with her little one in her arms. Her life seemed complete, until on Thursday June 20, 1918 another angel flew over the home leaving little Geraldine. Her faithful physicians, knowing her serious condition before, used every precaution and everything was attended to perfectly; for three days all seemed bright until Sunday morning as the sun rose the awful chill came on and at once told her husband and mother if she got so low as before she would never get up. All that medical skill could do was done, but of no avail. That great God of all this world said, 'Tis enough, come up higher. She suffered untold agony without complaint. Always had a smile for everyone and was so sweet and thankful for every little act of kindness shown her. She told her mother she could not live and asked her to raise her babies for her. She talked much of dying and going home and said she was ready to go, and, as before, named her baby. She passed out of this life calmly and peacefully Monday morning at 2:10 o'clock, July 1st, 1918, aged 23 years and 5 days, leaving a little babe, Geraldine, 10 days old, and little Gwyndolin, aged 18 months, who will never know a mother's love; a heart broken father and mother, husband, six brothers and one sister. Funeral services were conducted at Bacon Chapel Wednesday afternoon, July 3, by Rev. McIlroy and Rev. Nichols of Clarence in the presence of one of the largest crowds of sorrowing relatives and friends, many relatives attending from a distance. The floral offering was beautiful and profuse.
