Had Mr. Moeller lived until next spring, he would have been 98 years of age, an age vouchsafed to few of us and one which sees almost unimaginable changes in world history. During his more able days, Mr. Moeller loved to relate tales of the experiences he had lived through as a pioneer settler of a new undeveloped country. His life history is also a history of this community, of Hooper since its very beginning. Born March 30, 1844, in Westphalia, Germany, he grew to young manhood there and was united in marriage to Joanna Langemeier, and in 1869 they with their eldest son, C. Henry, left their native land, making their crossing in one of the slow sailing vessels of that time. They came directly to Dodge county in search of a favorable location, Mr. Moeller first finding employment near Arlington but not for long, as he soon purchased a 160-acre tract of school land three miles northwest of the present site of Hooper where they made their first permanent home, the place now occupied by his son, John H. C. Moeller. Mr. Moeller worked and prospered, adding to his land holdings from time to time and becoming generally known as a successful farmer and stockraiser, by his thrift and careful management attaining a place of prominence and influence throughout the county. Besides, his farm interests he was also active in other affairs of the community. He helped form the Farmers Mutual Home Insurance company in 1872 and remained its president for 42 years, being president also for a number of years of the former Dodge County Bank of Hooper. Mr. Moeller retired from active farm life in 1909 and came to Hooper to live in the home where his death occurred. His wife preceded him in death, passing away in 1925. He is survived by three daughters and one son, John H. C. Moeller. The daughters are Mrs. E. G. Niebuhr, with whom he made his home since the death of his wife: Mrs. J. H. Hartenberger, Redbud, Ills., and Mrs. E. J. Rink of Hooper. He is also survived by 25 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. Funeral services for this highly respected citizen were held Tuesday afternoon, first from the home here in Hooper and then from St. John's Lutheran church, northwest of Hooper, which Mr. Moeller helped to found many years ago and in which he remained a faithful worshipper to the end of his days, attending its services as long as his health permitted. Rev. Theo. Norden, pastor of the church, conducted the services which were largely attended by old time neighbors and friends of the deceased and his sorrowing family. Interment was made in the church cemetery with Wollmer & Warne in charge.
