The funeral services were held in the Wesley Chapel Church Wednesday afternoon conducted by Rev. Claude W. Cooper of Council Bluffs, a former pastor. Stonebraker, John R. Clark, Ellsworth Plumb, A. J. Harbor, Earl Allensworth, and O. J. Harris. Katherine Elizabeth Allensworth, the daughter of John and Lydia Allensworth, was born in Jefferson County, Ohio, December 13, 1841. She had seven sisters and five brothers of whom only her half sister, Mrs. Emmma Earle, of Davey, Nebraska survives. Her early life was spent in Ohio and in 1861 she was united in marriage to Robert Sowers at Roseville, Ohio. To this union eight children were born. In 1868 the family moved to Illinois where they lived for three years. Then in 1871 they journeyed by covered wagon to the sparsely populated prairie of western Iowa to establish a new home. they stopped first on the banks of Farm Creek, south of what is now the town of Henderson where they located permanently. The deceased has been a resident of Mills County for 62 years, living in or near Henderson all of that time except for a few years spent in Emerson. He husband preceded her in death on January 12, 1900. Grandma Sowers was in the true sense a pioneer. Coming to a newly settled country it was her privilege to support morally and materially those things which make a community a better place in which to live. She has been a member of the Methodist Church for many years. She was always vitally interested in the work of the church and gave liberally toward the establishment and maintenance of the churches in her community. Although she did not have the educational advantages of the present day she became, through her own efforts, very well informed concerning a great variety of subjects. hers was not the narrow vision of affairs just within her own home or small community, but rather of the nation and the world. Grandma Sowers typified the sturdy pioneer spirit. She was strong physically, intellectually, and morally. She was a good neighbor, a just and loving mother and a true friend. On Monday evening, October 19, she suffered a paralytic stroke, from which she never rallied and passed away at her home in Henderson, Monday, November 5, 1934, at the age of 92 years, 10 months, and 33 days. During the last year of her life she was faithfully and devotedly cared for by her daughter, Eva. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Grace, and by one son, W. Ellsworth. Those who survive are the daughters, Eva, at home, and Mrs. Allen Clark of Woodbine, and four sons, J. Elmer, James M., and Edgar F., of Henderson and Arthur D. of Jefferson. She also leaves 13 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and other relatives and friends. And so ends the life story of another pioneer mother. Malvern Leader, November 15, 1934, page 1 & 8
