West Street, aged 98 years, 10 months, and 29 days; and the oldest resident of Bellevue, died at 4:45 Sunday morning of Pneumonia after an illness of 16 days. Had Mrs. Smith lived until November 25; she would have celebrated her 99th birthday. She was born on that date in 1838. Mrs. Smith was the eldest daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth Karchner, and had lived here more than 37 years, coming to this vicinity 88 years ago with three sisters, two brothers, and her parents, from Allentown, Pennsylvania to a tract of land four miles west of Fremont, where her family first settled. As the eldest daughter of the family, Mrs. Smith secured employment as a school teacher, receiving a salary of $2.50 per week with board and room. At age 19, she married John Ferdinand Smith on May 27, 1858, Fremont, Sandusky County, Ohio; and to this union were born six children, four of whom survive; Mrs. Clara Tracy of Toledo, Misses Louise Smith and Armenia Smith of Bellevue, and Alta Smith of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Two other children were Nancy and Elizabeth Gould of Toledo. Mrs. Smith retained her facilities until the last. She was of slight build, had excellent eyesight, and a good memory. She was a member of St. Paul’s Reformed Church. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the family residence, in charge of Rev. Walter B. Lewis and Rev. G. T. Beam. Burial will be in Bellevue Cemetery by Young Funeral Home.
