The sudden and severe illness with attendant death within a few days, came as a shock to the many friends at Ulysses, where deceased had lived for almost thirty-three years past. Miss Gould had not been in good health of late, but made no complaint and was her usual cheerful self when she became violent ill Monday night. A physician was summoned who pronounced the case as very serious. However, everything possible was done to ameliorate her condition, when as a last hope she was taken to Lincoln, Thursday morning, where an operation for peritonitis was performed at St. Elizabeth's hospital Friday, where it was discovered that had been suffering from a complication of ailments. Her death occurred at 4 o'clock the same day. Catherine Gould was born in McLean county, Illinois, in 1878, and to mourn her departure is left one brother, Daniel Gould of near Ulysses, her parents, together with her sisters, Julia, the late Mrs. William Jones, Agnes and Bessie, also her brother James having preceded her to the other world. The blow falls with crushing force upon the surviving brother, who has the heartfelt sympathy of a host of friends in his hour of sorrow. "Katie" as she was familiarly called, also leaves several nephews and nieces, and a wide circle of friends who loved the quiet, refined, Christian young woman who lived the life of a practical Catholic, and in an unassuming way went about doing good. Her presence will be missed by the bereaved mother [brother] and in the church, where she was an untiring worker, while among her friends she will be remembered as the personification of all that is noble and good in splendid young womanhood. Fortified by the last sacraments of Holy church and when told she could not live she replied that she was ready and willing to depart when her soul returned to God, who gave it. The remains were brought to her home at Ulysses Saturday, where a requiem high mass was celebrated for the repose of her soul by the pastor, Father Loughan at St. Mary's church, Monday morning at 10 o'clock, December 20, 1920, after which the remains were laid to rest by the side of her kindred at St. Mary's cemetery, near town. "Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and may light perpetual Shine upon her."
