Payer Died In Cedar Rapids Rites Here Monday” Mrs. Jacob Payer, who had been making her home with her daughter, Mrs. Monte Smith at Cedar Rapids for the past several months, died there Friday morning [11 May 1951] following a long illness. Catherine Payer was born Oct. 17, 1869 in Czechoslovakia. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Novotny. They came to America when she was four years old and they settled in Winneshiek county, Iowa. There she grew to womanhood. She was united in marriage with Jacob Payer Nov. 17, 1891. They farmed near Pocahontas a number of years and retired and moved to town in 1920. She was a devout member of SS.
