Payer had been making his home with his son during the past few weeks due to the illness of Mrs. Payer, who has been at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Monte Smith of Cedar Rapids. He was born on July 25, 1861, in Spillville, Ia., and was united in marriage with Catherine Novetny (continued on page 7) “Payer” (Continued from page one) “on Nov. 17, 1891. They farmed near Pocahontas for several years before retiring and moving to town in 1920. Mr. Payer had been a resident of the county for 59 years. Survivors include his widow, one son, John of Pocahontas; one daughter, Mrs. Monte Smith of Cedar Rapids; eighteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one brother F. J. Payer of Boone. Among the relatives and friends from a distance attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Orville Pickering of Rantoul, Ill.; Mrs. Mary Hippert of Wilmont, Minn.; Roy L.
