CATHERINE SWANSON Catherine Ridinger was born in Jefferson county, Iowa, on July 30, 1842 and passed away at her home, 2324 Capitol avenue, Des Moines, Iowa, on April 20, 1926, at the age of 82 years, 3 months and 20 days. She was the youngest of nine children born to Samuel and Mary Ridinger, who had emigrated to Iowa from Tennessee in 1832. On July 17, 1862, she was married to Nelson John Swanson of the same county and in that community they made their home until in 1874, when they moved to Lucas county and settled on a farm in Pleasant township, where they resided until the death of the husband on April 3, 1910. In 1912 she located in Des Moines, which place has since been her home. Mrs. Swanson was the mother of eleven children, eight of whom survive and were all present at the last sad rites, Ella, who lived at home with her mother; Mrs. Rhoda Brown of Chariton; Andrew and Marion of Des Moines; Mrs. Carrie Long and Mrs. Mary Turner of Russell; Mrs. Eugenia Foster and Mrs. May Banta of Des Moines; Ludwig, died in 1922; Victoria Warren died in 1925; and Victor in infancy. She also leaves to mourn her passing 27 grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren and a half-brother, S. M. Ridinger of Murray, Iowa. When a young girl she professed faith in Christ and ever afterward was a faithful worker in his vineyard, being a member of the Gallilee Baptist church of Des Moines at the time of her death. She will be remembered as a woman of strong character, firm in her conviction of right and wrong, hospitable in her home where she loved to welcome her friends. Her children, though all of mature years, will miss her wise counsel, for none can take her place. The remains were brought to this county and largely attended funeral services, conducted by her pastor, Rev. Frank A. Case, were held at Zion church on Thursday afternoon at 2:00 p.m., after which the remains were tenderly laid to rest beside those of her husband in the nearby cemetery.
