He started out with his parents to America in 1852. His mother died on the voyage and was buried at sea. He enlisted in Company E, Second Iowa volunteers, in April, 1861. Son of John and Carrie Swanson OBITUARY THE CHARITON LEADER Chariton, Iowa Thursday, April 7, 1910 SWANSON Nelson John, son of John and Carrie Swanson, was born in Smoland, Sweden, Nov. 1, 1841. He started out with his parents to America in 1852. His mother died on the voyage and was buried at sea. He enlisted in Company E, Second Iowa volunteers, in April, 1861. He was married in Jefferson county, Iowa, July 17, 1862 to Miss Catherine Ridinger. To this union were born eleven children, four sons and seven daughters, one son, Victor, dying in infancy. The wife and ten children were with him in his last hours. The children are as follows: Andrew of Lovilia, L. A. and M. M. of Des Moines, Mrs. Rhoda Brown of Osceola, Mrs. Victoria Warren of Lovilia, Mrs. Carrie Long, Mrs. Mary Turner, Ella, Eugenia and Mae of Pleasant township. He also leaves twenty-one grandchildren and an aged sister, Mrs. Ella Peterson of Clay Center, Neb. He came with his family to Lucas county in 1874 and located in Pleasant township on the farm where he died. Mr. Swanson had been in poor health for some time. He went to Kansas City to the sanitarium, failing to find relief. He then went to Hot Springs, Arkansas, where he steadily grew worse. Realizing his time on earth was short, he returned home on March 20, where everything was done by his loved ones to prolong his life but to no avail. He quietly passed to the great beyond Sunday morning, April 3, 1910. He realized that he must go and was ready to follow the summons of his Master, who he had followed for years. His friends were numbered by his acquaintances and his family and friends realize that one is gone whose place cannot be filled. Funeral services were conducted at Zion church, Tuesday, April 5, by Rev. H. M. Wells by the request of the deceased. The remains were tenderly laid to rest in the Zion cemetery.
