She never married OBITUARY THE CHARITON LEADER Chariton, Iowa Tuesday, August 1, 1944 SARAH ELLEN SWANSON Sarah Ellen Swanson, daughter of Nelson John Swanson and Catherine Swanson, was born in Walnut township, Jefferson county, Iowa on April 16, 1863, and died at her home in Des Moines on July 13, 1944, at the age of 81 years, 2 months and 27 days. At the age of ten she moved with her parents to Lucas county, Iowa. She taught her first term of school at the age of sixteen and continued teaching for thirty-nine years. Her pupils will never forget her kind and patient efforts to teach them to abide by the "Golden Rule" and also the Bible verses she read to them each morning. In 1913, she moved with her mother to Des Moines, where she has since resided. She was a faithful and active member of the Federal Church at Urbandale and taught Sunday school class as long as she was able to attend. She was the eldest of a family of eleven children, four boys and seven girls, of whom two brothers and five sisters survive. They are Andrew Swanson, Marlon Swanson and Mrs. Rhoda Brown, all of Chariton; Mrs. Carrie Long, of Seattle, Wash.; Mrs. Mary Turner, of near Russell; Mrs. Eugenia Foster and Mrs. May Banta, of Des Moines; thirteen nephews and fourteen nieces. Her entire life was one of unselfish devotion in serving and helping others whenever she could and to know her was to love her. She was a grand, good Christian woman and lived a life worthy of emulation. Besides her relatives, she will be sadly missed by a host of friends. She requested that her funeral services be held at Zion church, and in accordance with this request, final rites were held at that place at three o'clock Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Thos. Doyle, of Des Moines, and interment was in the Zion cemetery. She was buried in a dress given her at one of Zion's homecomings, as she was greatly beloved in that vicinity where she lived for nearly half a century. Pallbearers were nephews, Chas. Brown, Chas.
