She passed away peacefully and naturally with the calmness of one in deep slumber. Catherine Tully was born May 1, 1826, at Navan, county Meath, Ireland. When two and a half years old she came with her parents to New York state, where the family lived one year and then removed to Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. She was married there in 1843 to William Gavin, and two years later they came to Dubuque via canal and river. From Dubuque they came to Washington township, Jones county, and resided there up to the time of her death, which took place Jan. 22d, on the 14th anniversary of her husband‘s death. Twenty-four years ago Squire and Mrs. Gavin celebrated their golden wedding which was a notable gathering of the family and friends from all over Dubuque and Jones county. Mrs. Gavin was the mother of twelve children, ten of whom survive her, as follows: Mrs. Jane Dixon, Mrs. Mary Leonard, Mrs. Jerry Callahan, Mrs. William Dolphin, Miss Lucy, and Joseph, Charles and James Gavin, all of Washington township; John Gavin, of Hopkinton, and Mrs. Michael Crowley, of Castle Grove. Two children, William Gavin, Jr., and Katherine, preceded her in death. She had 63 grandchildren, of whom 53 are living, end 29 great grandchildren, of whom 26 survive. She has one sister living, Mrs. Lucy Young, of Cuyahoga Falls. O. All her surviving children were at her bedside when she passed away. Mrs. Gavin was a veritable mother in Israel whose influence for good and uprightness extended over her numerous family and sought to guide them in the path of righteousness and the way of the faith that she held dear to her heart, and when she went to her final rest, after a long and useful life, it was with implicit confidence in and fortified by the sacraments of the Catholic church, of which she had been a long and devout member. The funeral took place on Wednesday from the old homestead to St. Martin’s church, Rev. L. Roche officiating. The pallbearers were the four sons, John, Joseph, Charles, and James Gavin, grandson, Daniel Dixon, and son-in-law Michael Crowley. The funeral was very largely attended.
