Gavin, son of a pioneer of Jones county, died Saturday after an illness of four months, from February 28th, when he was stricken with paralysis while on his way to visit his brother John, sick in Mercy hospital in Dubuque. He remained in Dubuque for several weeks and was then brought to his home in Washington township, where he lingered until last Saturday when death claimed him. Deceased was a son of William and Mary Gavin, and was born in Washington township, Jones county, April 9th, 1861. He passed his boyhood and manhood on his father's farm, and on April 12, 1893, he was married to Miss Mary Callahan and set up farming for himself. His wife died July 8th., 1926, and he is survived by the following children: one son, Irvin Gavin, and one daughter, Mrs. Emmet (Ray) O'Brien, of Washington township, Jones county. Mr. Gavin was a prominent and industrious and served the public as an industrious man, serving the public as a trustee in his township for a number of terms and was useful and important citizen, whose death is sincerely mourned not only by his family but by many friends. Mr. Gavin is survived by six sisters, Mrs. Jane Dixon, of Cascade, Mrs. Mary Leonard and Miss Lucy Gavin, of Dubuque, Mrs. Elizabeth Callahan and Mrs. Teresa Dolphin, of Washington township, and Mrs. Nellie Crowley, of Castle Grove, and one brother, James Gavin, of Temple Hill, Jones county. His deceased brothers were William, Joseph, and John. The funeral was held at St. Martin's church, Cascade, Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock, Rev. T. Rooney officiating. The pallbearers were W. B. Fagan, Leo Skahill, E. McGraine, John Tallman, J. T. Conlin, Frank Skahill, W. B. McQuillen and John Then.
