Charles Ambrose, eldest son of Daniel J. and Caroline Searls, was born November 2, 1861, in Seward township, Winnebago county, Illinois. He received his education and grew to young manhood in Illinois. In 1883 he, with his family, moved to Plymouth county, Iowa, settling on a farm near Portlandville (now Akron). On July 2, 1886, he was married to Nora Sargent. To this union was born ten children, seven of whom survive. Two of the children died when very young and one son, Clair, passed away in 1932. Mrs. Searls died in 1922. Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Searls established their home on a portion of his parents' farm. In 1910 the deceased moved to Brookings, S. D. purchasing a farm six miles north of there, where the family resided until 1917, when they moved into Brookings. The last six years Mr. Searls had resided in California, making his home with his sister, Mrs. Lillian Hollister, at San Jose. Left to mourn the passing of a kind and loving father are six sons—Edgar G., of Redlands, Calif.; Roscoe J., of near Brookings; D. Burdette, of Bruce, S. D.; Harry A., of Brookings C. Paul, of Devil's Lake, N. D., and Donald J., of Denver, Colo.; and one daughter, Mrs. Chris P. (Lillian) Hass, of Portland, Ore. All of the children except Mrs. Hass and Edgar were present at the funeral. He is also survived by three sister, Mrs. Lillian Hollister, of San Jose; Mrs. Belle Eaton of Pecatonics, Ill., and Mrs. Libbie Adams, of Akron, Iowa; and three brothers, Fred, of San Jose, and Howard and Gilbert of Akron, Iowa. Of a cheerful, kindly disposition, he endeared himself to all with whom he came in contact, and a host of friends sincerely regret his departure.
