Charles Amidon Branson was born July 3, 1914, in Amidon, N.D., the first child born in the new town of Amidon. His parents were George Austin and Golden Bess (Knights) Branson. They homesteaded, coming from Indiana and Illinois. Charles attended schools in Aberdeen after the family moved here after living a year in Canada. He graduated from Aberdeen Central High with the class of 1933. Charles attended the University of South Dakota, graduating in 1938. He was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. He entered the United States Army in 1942 and joined in activation of the 85th division at Camp Shelby, Miss., in the adjutant general department. He choose to transfer to the infantry and went to the Infantry School at Ft. Benning, Ga. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the infantry and then served one year at South Dakota State College in Brookings, S.D. From there, he went to Camp Fannin, Texas, and then joined the 4th Infantry Division in France. He was wounded in enemy action and after several months in the hospital, he was sent back stateside and was hospitalized at Bushnell General, Brigham City, Utah, Letterman General, San Francisco, and then at Fitzsimmons General in Denver, Colo. Charles was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star, Purple Heart and two campaign ribbons. He was promoted to Captain while at Letterman General Hospital and retired when he was at Fitzsimmons General Hospital. While Charles was a patient in Brigham City, Utah, he married Margaret Hanson, a social worker with the American Red Cross. They moved back to Aberdeen where Charles founded and operated C.A. Branson Culvert Co. Inc. of Aberdeen and Pierre, S.D. Charles served as Commander of the VFW post, was on the Alumni Board of the University of South Dakota, was a past president of the Brown County Sportsman's Club as well as other offices. Surviving are two sons, Charles (Carol) Branson Jr., of Denver, Colo., and Mark (Mary Olmstead) Branson of Austin, Texas; and two grandsons, James Branson and Nicholas Branson. Preceding in death are his wife, two sisters, Dorothy Downs and Helen Johnson, and one brother, Don. Published in the Aberdeen News on 9/25/2006.
