Charles Augustus Sickles was born at Bridgewater, Iowa, March 20th, 1869 and passed to his Heavenly reward January 2nd, 1931, aged 61 years, 9 months and 13 days. He lived with his parents until he was twenty-four years of age. On January 1st, 1893, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Martha Gray. They had been married thirty-eight years the day preceding his death. They lived on a farm near Bridgewater for seven years, then moved to Nebraska and located on a farm 7 miles west of Loup City, where they lived for ten years, after which they moved to Loup City, where they have since resided for twenty-one years. There were born to this union two children: Mrs. Ethel Curtis of Loup City, and Charles Sickles of Los Angeles, California. They also took a young child of Mr. Sickle's [sic] sister, Clarence Sinner, and reared him to manhood. About sixteen years ago Mr. Sickles was baptised [sic] into the fellowship of the First Baptist Church of Loup City and as long as he was able was present at the services of the church and Sunday school. He also served the church as deacon, but resigned because of ill health. His health has been failing for the last eleven years and three years ago he suffered a severe stroke which made him practically helpless. All that medical attention and loving care could do for him was done and no doubt this love and care lengthened his stay among us. He is survived by his devoted wife, two children, Mrs. Ethel Curtis and Charles Sickles, by his foster-son Clarence Sinner, two grand children, Velma and Charles Curtis. Also four brothers and three sisters: Will Sickles of Bridgewater, Iowa, Melvin and Elmer Sickles of Loup City, Everett Sickles of Litchfield, Nebraska, Mrs. Mary Herrick of Corning, Iowa, Mrs. Rhoda Sinner of Loup City, and Mrs. Rose Gray of Shelton, Nebraska, besides many nieces, nephews and a host of friends. While Mr. Sickles was in good health he was an active member of the Modern Woodsmen lodge and retained his membership to the end. Funeral services were held from the Baptist church Sunday afternoon in charge of Rev. E. C. Barton of Farnham, Nebraska, former pastor of the Loup City church and assisted by the present pastor, Rev. H. N. Johnson. Interment was in Evergreen cemetery. The church was literally packed with friends who had come to pay a last respect to one whom they loved. During the thirty-one years of his residence in Sherman county Mr. Sickles lived an exemplary life, always upholding those principles which make for a better community and his passing is regretted by all those who knew him.
