There died at his home, six miles south of this city Tuesday, probably the oldest man in the county. Charles Ayer, the subject of this notice, was born in Franklin, Connecticut, February 10, 1787, and was therefore nearly ninety-three years of age. At an early day he emigrated to Erie County, New York, and settled upon 200 acres of wild land. At that time Buffalo did not boast of more than a few straggling houses, and Syracuse was a mere cross roads. He lived to see that wilderness blossom as a rose, and cities and villages spring up all about him. One hundred acres of the land he first purchased in Erie county he owned until he came to Kansas in 1864. Here he purchased a farm six miles south of the city and has occupied it himself ever since. He was a complete farmer and businessman, and his farm is a model of neatness. He was regarded as one of the best authorities here on horticulture, and had the finest orchards and vineyard in the whole county. Mr. Ayer was a patriot and served his country as a soldier during the entire war of 1812, for which service he drew a pension the last quarter of which was due yesterday. Mr. Ayer's father, Timothy Ayer, was a soldier under Gen. George Washington in the Revolutionary War. Mr. Ayer was a whig so long as there was a Whig party, and after that joined the Republican ranks, and cast his last vote last fall for the nominees of that party. His first vote was cast for Thomas Jefferson, and he has voted at every election since. His health has always been good, and he retained all of his faculties to a remarkable degree. When the New York Tribune was first started he became one of its subscribers, and has taken it regularly ever since, and has never been obliged to wear glasses in reading it. Up to within a few days of his death he has been active about the farm, doing a good share of the farm chores, and was generally the first one in the house to arise in the morning. Mr. & Mrs. Ayer celebrated their golden wedding in September, 1866. In November, 1873, Mrs. Ayer died, since which Mr. Ayer has lived with his daughter and husband, Mr. & Mrs. Omer Ayer. Of the children of Mr. and Mrs. Ayer four daughters and one son are still living, viz: Mrs. Thaddeus Prentice of this city; Mrs. James Gleason, Mrs. Omer Ayer, and Miss Ayer, all living in Douglas county. The son Mr. C.C. Ayer, lives in New York State. Mr. CTK Prentice, of this city, is a grandson of Mr. Ayer, and there are a number of great-grandchildren. The funeral will take place from the residence this morning at eleven o'clock. ******************************** He married Anna Champlin, daughter of Charles and Mary Woodburn Champlin. Anna Champlin was a descendant of Pilgrims John Howland and John Tilley thru her father, Charles Champlin. This can be proven thru Mayflower Society in Plymouth, Mass.
