Barbur, Sr. was born February 10, 1931, to James B. and Mary Louise (Volz) Barbur at the family home in Geneva and passed away on March 16, 2006, at the Fillmore County Hospital at the age of 75. Charles learned the floral and nursery business at the knee of his father, taking over in 1960. He was the President and CEO of Barbur Floral Co. until shortly before his death. Charlie (known affectionately by his family and friends) did spend a few years farming, but soon discovered that his true vocation would be in the family business. He graduated from Geneva High School with the Class of 1949, and went on to attend Doane College in Crete for three years before returning to Geneva to manage the family business due to his father’s illness. While at Doane, Charlie sang with the Doane Singers and traveled with that group extensively. He spent many weekends coming home to help with the family business in his yellow roadster. On November 10, 1957, Charles was united in marriage to Sharon Elizabeth Stewart, an Arapahoe native in a gala wedding at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Geneva. To this union was born one daughter, Lorri Elizabeth and two sons, Charles Edward Jr. and Robert Stewart. Charles was an active and visible member of his community serving many organizations in leadership roles. He was the past master of Geneva Lodge No. 79 AF &AM of Geneva, Post Worthy Patron of OES Chapter No. 180 and a past member of the Sesostris Shrine of Lincoln. He was a 60-year member of the First Congregational Church of Christ in Geneva, where he served as a member and chairman of the Board of Deacons, and an active choir member of the Chancel Choir for a number of years, bringing his strong beautiful baritone to the sanctuary on many Sunday mornings. In addition, Charles served community service organizations as the Past President and Past Fire Chief of the Geneva Volunteer Fire Department, Past President of the Geneva Lions Club, Past President of the Geneva High School Alumni Association in 1968 and 1969, and served as an assistant scout master for his son’s scout troop. Professionally, Charlie was an active member of the Nebraska Florist Society for over 50 years and brought many changes and improvements to the family business. The business has grown steadily over the years and continues to be recognized for their fine crops of poinsettias, bedding and vegetable plants. Additionally, the design center continues to produce quality floral arrangements for the community and surrounding area. Charlie was proud of his business successes, but he was most proud of his six grandchildren who range in age from 25 to two. Each one spent countless hours with Grandpa and to each he imparted strength, wisdom and character. Their own unique personalities reflect the influence and impact he had on each one. Time spent visiting with family and friends were a source of great joy and his house was always filled with laughter and love. Not only did he touch the lives of his family members, he was a great influence on a number of other young adults in the community who looked to him as a father figure. You would find them often sitting with Charlie on the front porch always laughing and telling stories. He was preceded in death by his wife Sharon, the love of his life, on August 8, 1973, his parents James and Louise, and his sisters Dolores and Mary. He is survived by his daughter, Lorri Waldron and Dennis Burns; sons, Charles and Deb Barbur and Robert and Tracy Barbur; his grandchildren: Brooke Waldron, Brandon Waldron, Tanner, Taytum, Turner and Teneal Barbur; his brother, James and wife Daisy; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, J.R. and Judy Stewart; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Mary Lou Kuhlman; and brother-in-law Sheldon Johnson, other close relatives and a multitude of friends. Charles was a man of inner strength who faced much adversity and triumph throughout his life. His strong faith and trust in God saw him through many tragedies, but also reinforced his appreciation for the many joys that he experienced. He was a man who lived life on his own terms. He always said that he wanted to leave this world a better place by providing plants and flowers which created beauty in the community. Funeral services were conducted from the Congregational United Church of Christ in Geneva on Tuesday, March 21, 2006, with Pastor Lynn Strandt officiating. Nancy Cradduck accompanied the congregation, who sang “Amazing Grace.” She also played “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” as the processional hymn. The recessional was a recording of one of Charlie’s favorites, “Snowbird.” Casket bearers were Doug Gergen, Dean Waldron, Brandon Waldron, Dave Waldron, Jim White, and Mike Johnson. Honorary bearers were Brooke Waldron, Tanner, Taytum, Turner and Teneal Barbur. Interment was in the Geneva Public Cemetery. The Nebraska Signal March 29th, 2006 page 9.
