He passed away October 2, 1977, at the Fillmore County hospital at the age of 80 years, 3 months, and 10 days. He started school in Geneva and continued his schooling at Evergreen in rural Exeter. Barbur was born June 22, 1897, at Exeter, Neb., to Edward J and Lillian Horne Barbur. He passed away October 2, 1977, at the Fillmore County hospital at the age of 80 years, 3 months, and 10 days. He started school in Geneva and continued his schooling at Evergreen in rural Exeter. Engaged in farming as a young man, he met and married Mary Louise Volz on July 17, 1918, at Friend, Neb. To this union were born four children, two sons and two daughters. After learning the florist’s trade in Lincoln, he came to Geneva and founded the Barbur Floral Company in 1926. An expert grower and arranger, his love and care of plants grew until his death. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Geneva, Geneva Lodge No. 79, A.F.&A.M.; Geneva Lodge No. 180, O.E.S.; Geneva Lodge no. 65, I.O.O.F.; Stotzenberg Lodge , Knights of Pythias and Sesostris Shrine. During his year in Geneva, he served as Geneva public school board member, mayor of Geneva, city councilman, director of Nebraska State Florist society and a Geneva volunteer fireman. He was also active on various boards of the Congregational church. Surviving him are his companion of 59 years, Louise; daughter, Delores, and husband, John Votipka of Fairmont; son, James V. and wife, Daisy of Cleveland, O.; daughter, Mary and husband, Sheldon Johnson of Geneva; son, Charles E. of Geneva; 11 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, two brothers, John of Exeter and Howard of Rose Hill, Kas.; one sister, Mrs. Lucille Sole of Hastings and a host of relatives and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers, a son-in-law and a daughter-in-law. His pride and joy were the accomplishments and love of his family. One of his favorite hobbies was square dancing and before his health began to fail, he and Louise traveled considerably and had made many friends far and wide. Funeral services were conducted from the First Congregational church in Geneva at 2 p.m., Wednesday, October 5, with Rev. Woodrow Wilson officiating. Mrs. Willard Foster, organist, played “Peace in the Valley.” Honorary pallbearers were Charles F. Ashby, Willard H. Foster, Sherman F. Ashby, Vaughn C. Fulton, Wallace Chesnut, Ben Koehler and Carl Schneider. Acting pallbearers were Michael Johnson, James R. Barbur, Gary White, Richard Hoarty, James White and Charles Barbur Jr. Interment was in the Geneva cemetery. The Nebraska Signal 13 October 1977
