Charles was the second of ten children born to Samuel C. and Mary (Jenkins) Anderson: Sadie, Charles, Mabel, Roy, Louis, Nellie, Bertha, Wilbur, Bernice and Lester (who died in infancy). Charles served in the US Army from Feb. 15, 1918 to May 29, 1919. He was described as short with a medium build, gray eyes and light brown hair. He married Gladys Fiscus on January 24, 1920 in Polk County, Iowa.
