He graduated from the Ulysses High School with the class of 1921. In the fall of the same year he began teaching in a country school near Deer Trail, Colorado. He then spent two years as principal of the Nucla Colorado schools, and following two years of college work, was elected superintendent of schools at Marble, Colorado. He expected to take up his new duties in September. Charles came home for a visit recently and was preparing to go to Gunnison, to attend summer school, when he was taken suddenly ill of appendicitis. He was rushed to St. Elizabeth's hospital and operated on for ruptured appendix. His condition became grave for several days when improvement began and he was thought to be out of danger, but on Monday night he grew worse and on the following morning, he passed away. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Coyle, also one brother John. One brother, Joseph preceeded him. There are also his aged grandmother, other relatives and a host of friends who deplore his early passing. Charles was a loving and devoted son and brother, a dutiful grandson, a kind and sympathetic friend and a sincere Catholic. When the news of his death came to Ulysses, the shock to his many friends was great, as he was a general favorite with all who knew him. He was the possessor of a keen intellect and was a splendid student, whose efforts were crowned with success. He was a member of Theta-Tau-Omega, of Gunnison, Colorado, and had he lived to complete another six months of study, would have finished the four year course, and been awarded his degree of Bachelor of Arts. His parents recently received a letter from the Western State College of Colorado, stating that Charles had been granted a life certificate to teach in the public schools of Colorado. He was very popular in his graduating class of May, 1921. The white lily was the class flower. Among the floral tributes which lay on the casket was a beautiful wreath of white lilies, the gift of Charles Holderness, a former classmate and devoted friend. Thus, in the dawn and golden glow of his early and splendid manhood, he has been called to "come up higher." May God in His infinite goodness sustain the sorrowing loved ones in their bereavement. The sympathy of the entire community is tendered them in their great affliction. At the funeral services on Thursday morning, July 1, at St. Mary's Catholic church, Rev. Father Loughran celebrated a Requiem High Mass for the respose of his soul, and rendered a splendid and impressive sermon. A very large gathering of old friends and neighbors were in attendance. The pall bearers were: John Gray, James Ward, George Ward, Thomas Timoney, Thomas Powers, and Ed Schmitt. Interment was made in the St. Mary's cemetery. - E.B.L.
