Description	:	Margaret "Maggie" Coyle was born to Irish immigrant parents in a two-room shack on a homestead in the southern part of Seward County Nebraska, near Friend, in 1872. She was the youngest of 13 children, six still living at her birth. Maggie's father, Stephen Considine, died in a railroad accident at Plattsmouth, Nebraska when she was 1 year old. She was the youngest of 13 children, six still living at her birth. Maggie's father, Stephen Considine, died in a railroad accident at Plattsmouth, Nebraska when she was 1 year old. In 1875 the grasshoppers took all the crops in that area. Maggie writes, "Mother had a very nice garden. Hoping to save it from the grasshoppers she covered a part of it with a quilt, but to her sorrow, the hoppers ate the quilt and all." To stretch the coal supply, cornstalks were burned in the kitchen stove. She also remembers drawing water out of a 100 foot well by means of a bucket and rope over a windlass. "Indians often came begging, they were friendly and we were not afraid of them. Every home had a few furrows plowed around it which was called a firebreak as a protection from prairie fires. Now and then a covered wagon drawn by oxen wended its way westward. Children's faces peeped out from the doorway of the wagon." In 1881 her mother sold the homestead and the family moved to a farm near Staplehurst. Maggie attended school in Dist.15 and in Staplehurst afterwards attending high school in Seward. At the age of 14, Maggie began teaching in a rural school in Seward County. For 16 years she taught in Bee, Utica, Tamora, and Gresham. Maggie had a life long love of poetry and music. She played the piano and violin and wrote many poems as well as contributing to the obituaries in the Ulysses newspaper. In 1903 she met William John Coyle who had come to farm near Staplehurst and they were married in St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Seward, NE. They raised 3 sons, Charles, Joseph, and John. Joseph and Charles preceded both their parents in death and William died in 1951. Mrs Coyle continued making her home in Seward and David City until her death in 1964.
