His death shortly before five o'clock Monday afternoon, came as a shock to the community. Mr McDonnell had been feeling indisposed the earlier days of last week, but insisted on doing his share of the heavy clerical work at the Armory on September 30, when the subscriptions to the Fourth Liberty Loan were registered. His extreme fatigue was followed by chills and two days later, his illness had all the symptoms of pneumonia. In the latter days of the week, it seemed as though the malady would run its course, but that McDonnell would eventually recover. Sunday, however, he had a relapse and gradually sank to his death. He remained in possession of his faculties until the end. He demise was due to influenza and pneumonia. Charles J McDonnell was born July 27, 1874 at Bramptonville, Quebec. When he was four years old, he and the other members of the family moved to Nova Scotia where they lived three years, after which they settled in Minnesota. After 3 years of residence there, they went to British Columbia, removing four years later to Virginia, IL, where young McDonnell, then about fourteen and a half years old, entered high school and later graduated. He attended IIlinois college at Jacksonville and then taught school for a year in 1893. Mr McDonnell came to Ida Grove and took a position in the Baxter & Reed bank, later that of Baxter Bros. Here he has faithfully served his employers and the public for a full quarter of a century. In 1914 he was made clerk of the school board of the Ida Grove special district which he held until the time of his death. In June 1917, Mr McDonnell circulated the organization papers for the formation of Ida Grove chapter of Red Cross, securing the signatures for the charter members. When the organization was perfected, he was made treasurer and re-elected last November. Mr McDonnell was married April 25, 1900 to Miss Catherine Sauer, daughter of Julius Sauer, now a resident of Hazelton, ND. Two daughters blessed this union Janet Louise and Rosemary. Mr McDonnell is survived by his wife and daughters and by one sister, Mrs. Willis T Davis of Virginia, IL, who is here to attend the funeral. He was an honored member of the Ida Grove Masonic bodies — Kane Lodge AF & AM, Eastern Star the RAM Chapter, Mizpah Commandery, and also of the Shrine at Sioux City. The Masonic fraternity will have charge of the funeral, which will he held on Thursday at 2 pm at the late residence. Mr McDonnell was a man of happy disposition, industrious and faithful in the discharge of his duties. He was devoted to his home and family and found his greatest delights in his domestic circle. No less tender was his love for his only sister, who will miss his many acts of thoughtfulness. His father was a railway auditor and the son apparently inherited the talents for business affairs, the deep love of reading, the splendid memory and the breadth of knowledge and information.
