Charles Jerman, Sr., was born November 16, 1874 in Kamene Zehrovice in Czechoslovakia. At the age of seven years he left his homeland with his parents, four brothers and three sisters for America. They settled at West Point, Nebr. where his parents bought a farm and where Charles loved and worked until manhood when he took over managing the farm. His father passed away in 1903 and a year later on May 28, Charles was married to Antonie Sedlacek. After farming there for seven more years the young couple bought a farm near Spencer, Nebr. and moved there with their family. Two years later they moved to town where he managed the Farmers elevator with great success for five years. In 1918 he moved his family to a farm west of Verdigre where he lived until 1938. He then moved to Niabrara where he lived the rest of his life. He was 82 years, 1 month and 22 days old when he passed away January 8, 1957. Funeral services were held in the ZCBJ hall in Verdigre, January 10 with Rev. Gorden Jensen of the Congregational church in Creighton officiating. George Skokan of Niobrara spoke in the Czech language. Pallbearers were frank R. soucek, James Mott,Sr., and Henry Prokop of Verdigre and Anton Netherds, Abner stubb3en and Joe B. Liska of Niobrara. Burial was in the Jelen cemetery beside the grave of his wife. Mr. Jerman enjoyed the very best of health all his life and was admired by his many friends for his straightforward dealings and honesty. In 1901 Charles became a member of the ZCBJ lodge in Clarkson, Nebr., where he drove for 46 miles with a horse and buggy to attend meetings. Shortly thereafter with the help of Anton Odvarka and three other members they organized a new ZCBJ lodge in Beemer, Nebr. He was a leader in his community and was always interested in civic affairs, being elected for three consecutive terms as president of lodge Karlin in Spencer, he was director of rural schools for 19 years, president of Lodge Bila Hora in Verdigre, president of the Sokol organization, for many years president of Washington-Western Telephone Co., president of the Farmers' Union in Verdigre, and of Riverside local No. 137.
